A research team from the @oconnorlab.bsky.social has made a breakthrough in elucidating the biosynthesis of plant natural products by combining scRNA-seq and scMS in the same plant cell. The study was published in @pnas.org. www.ice.mpg.de/516369/PR_Ka...
A glimpse into the cell factory: matching gene expression to metabolite production in single plant cells
A research team at the Max Planck Institute for Chemical Ecology has successfully combined single-cell RNA sequencing (scRNA-seq) and single-cell mass spectrometry (scMS) analysis on the same plant ce...

Very exciting to finally see our iridoid cyclase ICYC online @natplants.nature.com!
A joined effort with Robin Buell’s lab with Josh Wood generating snRNA-seq, and my student Chloée Tymen performing the initial experiment.

Discovery of iridoid cyclase completes the iridoid pathway in asterids - Nature Plants
Iridoids are terpenoid metabolites found in thousands of plants. Using single-cell transcriptomics, the authors discovered an unexpected enzyme that has been neofunctionalized to catalyse the cyclization required to form the iridoid scaffold.

As a frequent user of the ponds, it disgusts me that terfs are taking a beautiful place and pouring their hate into it. Please fill in this survey if you want to protect this space for all women and make trans women feel. PS the ducks think terfs suck. And the friendly fox. And the crows.
The Gender Critical have already inundated this survey with their disgusting views on banning trans people from using the ponds.

Would be a shame if we inundated with trans positive views on not banning trans people.

Finally online and open access!
This revised version has a slightly different title and contains a number of additional supplementary figures, mainly in vitro enzyme assays. Kept me quite busy in the lab at the end of last year!

Ipecac alkaloid biosynthesis in two evolutionarily distant plants - Nature Chemical Biology
Ipecac alkaloids are plant-derived compounds historically used to induce vomiting. Here the authors elucidate how two evolutionary distant plant species have evolved to produce the same ipecac alkaloi...

yup, degree in physiology and PhD in developmental biology here - not once
I have a PhD in Genome Sciences

I have taught graduate level courses on human genetics

I have taken graduate level courses specifically on "the Evolution of Sex" and "Sexology" (the study of sex)

Never once did I hear the terms "biological sex"

It's a political dogwhistle, not science
I took Honors Biology in high school 6 years ago and sociology along with anatomy 3 years ago the year I graduated from trade school(2 school years: served as the second half of my high school years). Not once have I ever heard "biological male". It's all a bunch of bs. Transphobia is anti-science.

We would love feedback on a new NCBI-BLAST service we are launching today: sky-blast.com

Under the hood it's the same BLAST executable and databases provided by NCBI, with a replica of the NIH's interface - providing an alternative to the US gov service that's less congested, faster & more reliable
