Mainly here to read. May offer a thought or opinion from time to time.
Probably not.

But depending on what dumb shit the President or other Republicans say between now and then, maybe 60 votes isn't 100% guaranteed a second time.

I'll believe this shutdown is over when the bill is signed by Trump.

It wasn't much different last time Trump was President when the users here were still on Twitter. So many were convinced that somehow the 2016 election was going to be declared "invalid" and Hillary Clinton would magically become President instead. 🙄

Question: is there another part of this process that requires cloture (60 votes) before this passes the Senate and moves on to the House?

The day of, then the day after the election in November, both a 73 year old independent lady who I worked the election day polls with, then my 16 year old daughter the next day, remarked "it doesn't matter, both sides are terrible anyway" about Trump's victory.
November 10, 2025 at 6:42 PM
A big part of the reason we're living through Trump 2.0 is so many potential Dem voter's unrealistic expectations about what is possible if Dem politicians just "really, really tried harder". 🙄

The "both sides are awful" message definitely resonated with casual political "news" followers last year.

It's now open season. A lot more people are going to discover their shocking premium increases over the next month.

A successful vote to extend the subsides is more likely in Dec than now.

... unless we were just supposed to keep the govt closed indefinitely until a "yes" vote?
November 10, 2025 at 6:10 PM
I almost never go to the doctor either.

I'm happy about this.

It means I'm relatively healthy.

This would be like demanding a refund from my auto insurance company because I didn't get in a crash last year. 🙄

I have two accounts. The other one is most about sharing bird pictures. I'm quite certain being logged on more there than here would be better for me.
November 10, 2025 at 5:46 PM
The idea that Democrats were going to force the GOP to extend subsides through shutdown pain was probably always almost pure fantasy.

What may do it, is another month of news stories and phone calls about the outrageous premium increases.

But maybe not.

Either way, blaming Dems only helps Trump.
November 10, 2025 at 5:43 PM
I'm interested to see what happens with the ACA vote next month.

Also, I think that why this ended is that it became clear that the GOP was not going to extend ACA subsidies now.

What too many forget is that the GOP does NOT care about their constituents ... or even bad poll numbers.
November 10, 2025 at 5:43 PM
Sure, this should be bad for the Senate Dem "cavers" ... Primarily next year.

But when the premium increases keep hitting, not even having a vote in the House on the subsidies should be made VERY painful for any GOP Rep in an even semi close district.
November 10, 2025 at 5:23 PM
One is more effective than the other.

Sure, primaries for everybody next year.

But for the next couple of months, laser focus the anger on Republicans.

Trump and his allies are already crowing about how the Democrats caved. Most of the commentary from this app is only helping them.
November 10, 2025 at 5:20 PM
Absolutely.

The part that's going to suck (for at least a little while), is to get to Medicare for All, we're probably going to have to see the whole system virtually collapse.

... and that's what will happen if the GOP gets what it wants.
November 10, 2025 at 2:30 PM
We need to get over the anger at Democrats quickly and refocus it on GOP House members in close districts.

If subsidies aren't restored, that January vote to keep the govt open should be made to be excruciating for people like my GOP Rep who won the last election by only a point and a half.
November 10, 2025 at 2:11 PM
Define "win".

Too many on this site in particular had some fantasy of this shutdown ending with the GOP and Trump administration giving the Democrats everything they wanted.

That was Never going to happen.

This was always going to end with a compromise that many on "our side" would hate.
November 10, 2025 at 1:21 PM
My GOP representative is in one of the mostly divided districts in the country. He will be hearing about this issue A Lot over the next month.
November 10, 2025 at 1:18 PM
Sure.

And the right time to care about that was last November.

Instead many on this site were screaming at Kamala Harris about Gaza. 🙄
November 10, 2025 at 3:53 AM
In the past that was usually the GOP.

Not sure it matters that it's flipped.

It's very hard, if not impossible to make the majority party pass something they really don't want to.
November 10, 2025 at 3:03 AM
This is my thought too. If you believe that the GOP will never vote on subsidies while the govt is closed, then why keep it closed just on that issue?

One thing I think many on this site forget is that the party setting demands to end a shutdown almost never gets what they want.
November 10, 2025 at 3:03 AM
Outrageous (but maybe not really) prediction.

In the fall of 2027 the Donald J Trump "big beautiful" Medicare For All act passes and is signed into law.
November 10, 2025 at 2:17 AM
Also, yes, I have people close to me who will be impacted by the subsidies expiring.

This is not a "whew I got mine" thing.

This whole situation is a shitshow.

No "good" outcome.

The die was cast last November 😟
November 10, 2025 at 2:07 AM
Here's the thing, I'm not sure that the GOP (especially in the House) was ever going to vote to extend the subsidies ... no matter how long the government stayed shut down.

Let's see what happens with the ACA vote in December.

I will be contacting my GOP Rep (in a very swing district) about it.
