Oh that's great! I started this project today to improve my skills: The blue robot is named Plowie and is used in FTC game reveal videos. Seems like some straight forward geometry to practice with.

(My robotics team uses OnShape - it is web based and free for education)
Whichever software you use get an understanding of the available tools. I went through each tool in the menu bar to know what it does.

Then I looked at existing CAD designs. OnShape has a lot of public documents.
