I think everything is fair up to 650cc, then it get's use-case specific after that.

There are some things a 300 legit can't do, but a 450 can go just about anywhere, and the price difference is fairly negligible.

You really can't go wrong with the big Japanese 4.

Honda and Kawaski both make great mid-weights.

I can't say how I know this. It's probably just the autism. I wouldn't think about it too much.

It's so great seeing you all smol and cute like this while knowing that you could actually rip me in half irl.

Part of learning to ride is learning to mitigate risk factors like that.

Take an MSF course; it's worth every dollar, even if you opt later not to commute on the highway.

I could reasonably argue that no one needs more than a 900, and even that is pushing it, but not all engines have the same output at high weight classes, and the v-twin club would break down my door.

I own a v-twin and love it, but it's lossy engine design. lol

Dual sports have unbeatable utility and the 650 weight class is good on any road.

Used market on those is usually pretty good, too.

If you want affordable and new, tho, the Himalayan 450 is solid.

I need Keanu Reeves-money so I can have a Keanu Reeves variety of bikes.

This is definitely my flavor of autism. lmao.

Not to mention, the smaller the engine, the better the fuel eco.

My 500 gets 65mpg on a bad day, and I'm not polite with it. You can't get a gas car, even a hybrid, to do the same.

Now go up to a liter and you're lucky to see 30mpg if you're babying it.
November 20, 2025 at 7:08 PM
Definitely, even the 400s struggle to keep up on Colorado's 75mph highways.

Most 500's will top out at 100, but that's easily enough.

They're fun, tho.

I have a 500cc sport cruiser and a 850cc ADV, the cruiser is so fun and easy to work on, I can't feasibly get rid of it, and the ADV is dependable even in the snow.

Each one was around $5k bought. No need for anything more.
November 20, 2025 at 6:56 PM
Oh, and while we're at it, a bike with torque the chews through tires is also demolishing brake pads.

It also runs hotter and typically needs frequent heavy-weight oil/filter changes.

Chains and sprockets wear quick too.

So like, $12k bike + ~$800 in maintenance each year. Or you could not.

But funny enough, the most compelling reason I find that's actually effective to dissuade new riders from a liter is the cost factor.

Motorcycles eat tires. Remember those racing tires I mentioned? Expensive. Replacing them ever 16 months? Hella expensive. A 650cc costs half as much.
