It's World Poetry Day, and I'm remembering how poetry saves me, the way my daughter does every day. This is one of the first poems I wrote after a decade-long pause from poetry. Never published, always turned down. Sharing bec today is about light: of words, of new life.

Happy World Poetry Day🪶❤️✨

"may you open your eyes to water/ water waving forever/ and may you in your innocence/ sail through this to that"

Another lovely poem to open the New Year by Lucille Clifton (the other one, "i am running into a new year", is also gorgeous & a fave). Thanks to Chandra Persaud for sharing this beaut❤️

Grateful to Meari Mag & editor Giljoon Lee for featuring my poem, Someone told me, "You write from the heart, that's why everything you write is special", in their weekly poetry showcase. ✨

Thank you to @sreelekha2024.bsky.social whose kind words inspired this poem.

Full poem is on mearimag.com.

Trigger warning: Rape/SA - I sat with this, what will become one of my favorite micro essays I've written, on the 25th hour of a submissions call by @thehooghlyreview.bsky.social,
not quite sure where I was headed. Only that it was a poem that didn't work for other editors & it's "not there yet".

Powerful poem. "Frida Kahlo to Marty McConnell" by Marty McConnell:

"you loved a man
with more hands than a parade
of beggars, and here you stand. heart
like a four-poster bed. heart like a canvas.
heart leaking something so strong
they can smell it in the street."
