Escaping from the other place. Recovering academic (film theory/philosophy) but returning to my first love (biological sciences) and wondering what it's all about. None the wiser, but better informed.
They will but very few can demonstrate the design was by someone like Capability Brown and hasn't already suffered degradation. Also as I'm only proposing ones enjoyed by the public get considered so this should be done via the National Trust or English Heritage not private owners.

The views from the garden are part of the design, hence the term borrowed landscape. It was about gardening views on a fairly massive scale. If over time these have been compromised already build away. I just think preserving a couple of the best as intended (including views) is worth considering.

Agreed 99.999% we need houses as a priority, but if we lost every example of the landscape movement grand gardens it would be a great shame. The best of them are the cathedrals of horticulture. This is a very small plea for the historical significance of gardening so try not to be cross.

Dead is dead I'm afraid and I can't see how they bring him back. However, even as a lifelong Bond fan my biggest sadness isn't that they killed him of but that the OO section only exists in fiction as there is a growing list of actual multi-Billionaire lunatics who could do with a visit.

I'm not defending it and of course landscapes change, but a town on the horizon is going to look rather different.

As a bond fan for over half a century I'm also of the opinion that killing him off did kill him off. The only possible way out of it I could see is doing a historical version, more allied to the books, but that isn't the type of global cinema the are aiming at so its a non starter.

I'm not saying it at all justifies it but these gardens used the concept of 'borrowed landscape' as an integral if not major part of their design so the development will negate that. Of course one can easily argue it no longer deserves this protection, but the nimbyisms isn't a random rejection.

He's not the first DG to be pushed out for not being right wing enough, but he might be the last. I can't see them appointing anyone who will fight for BBC independence and I'm nor sure there will be much of a terrestrial TV ecosystem to fight for by the time we get to the one after that. Very sad.

Statistics caution. Without some sense of how the cost of necessary expenditure (especially housing) has gone up at the same time, or whether this accounts for the increased number of wage earners in a 'household' this doesn't tell us anything about purchasing power in terms of optional spend.

I think a good number of this tribe are more enraged by the lack of tax paid by the extremely wealthy and certain(tech) corps than think this alone is a magic solution. It's about fairness and are suspcious that such accusations are avoiding the even harder option of taking on the ultra-rich.

Despite Altman trying to deny they were asking for federal help Gary Marcus has posted "OpenAI explicitly asked the White House office of science and technology (OSTP) to consider Federal loan guarantees, just a week earlier: see 5th para cdn.openai.com/pdf/21b88bb5...

Maybe he'll decide to go because enough is enough, it is time to put the victims first and to come clean, confess all and name names. Then again the could decide to stay home, play golf and do fuck all as he has less human compassion than a bottle of toilet duck.

Of course taxes need to rise in general to fund services, but they need to seem fair to people. The suspicion is sensible moderates think the tax burden on the super wealthy is fine, or too hard to do anything about or like Peter Mandelson they are simply intensely relaxed about the super rich.

NVIDIA are making similar noises and for the same reasons. The main players in AI know there isn't enough market money to meet their mad demands so are looking for the US govt to bail them out. Expect to hear less 'amazing tech future' more 'China is going to win' and 'too big to fail' rhetoric.

It means, like OpenAI they not confident market greed will keep the bubble growing so they are turning to geopolitical fear. They want to be seen as too big to fail so the US Govt must bail out ALL debt associated with the development of AI. This is where all the missing money is going to come from.

Take the AI/Tech bubble out of the equation and the US economy is at a standstill. When the bubble bursts, which will be before the next GE, the negative consequence of that correction/slump/depression for MAGA economics and the USA's global standing will be visible from space even for 'vibe' voters.

and a shout out for Christopher Chung for giving us Roddy Ho who manages to combine the magnificent self-delusion of Don Quixote with the moral maturity of Bevis and Buthead.

It was the fact that the extraordinary vocal control didn't get in the way or overwhelm the sublime musicality of the performance. And she really conveyed how much fun she was having! She's new to me so will definitely seek out more. Thanks for sharing.
