City leaders need to consider biking, scooting, and transit more when shaping urban areas.

“Following the money“ to uncover root causes of public problems is tough. My cases from Austin, Texas and Banjul, Gambia provide examples combining qualitative & quantitative methods.

Speaking of money, @brisunipress.bsky.social offers 50% off right now: bristoluniversitypress.co.uk/transport-tr...

I’m not in a rush to incorporate AI in my research, but can appreciate Perplexity as a replacement for search. The simple query on statistics was clear and referenced with good sources.

Calmer streets are where this design really shines, here as a shoulder that can also serve pedestrians. That’s a money saver when you can’t get a sidewalk in. But I wanna look at other issues like safety over time.

The bike lane turns into a buffer that is also helpful for car pedestrian movements.

The NE 43rd Ave between NE Tillamook St and NE Sandy Blvd was full of more cars than bikes, but I could still negotiate space through the bike lane.‘Negotiate’ is key, as the main aspect of this infrastructure is the middle lane is flexible for vehicles going either direction.

I biked through Portland’s ‘advisory bike lanes’ today, to see how motorists and bicyclists negotiated space on these pilot projects.

@pbotinfo.bsky.social has a useful page on the projects at www.portland.gov/transportati...

Austin, Texas is a different situation, but still most capital is outside the state, and growth is fast content.kvue.com/photo/2017/0...

Texas earns a 30/50 rank in @bikeleague.bsky.social 2024 report card (bikeleague.org/wp-content/u...).

Zinger: “Texas spends a very low amount of federal funding on biking and walking per capita-less than the cost of one Whataburger Jr. annually per person.”

Portland, OR’s Fixing Our Streets $.10/gal gas tax funds a lot of needed projects, guided by an Oversight Committee (I am a member). www.portland.gov/transportati... Lack of funding is cited as why cities can’t make safer, livable streets; but it doesn’t have to be that way.

It’s getting cool in Portland’s Forest Park. How are you preparing for fall?

Be sure to water your asphalt. Many homeowners neglect in the early spring when roads need municipal water the most. satire.

The proposed expansion of I-35 in Austin, TX has triggered another lawsuit from local plaintiffs, alleging TxDOT violated NEPA, is taking parkland, and other issues.KUT's Nathan Bernier has the story (www.kut.org/transportati...) and complaint:

Mbembe uses the architectural perspective to critique a totalizing global capitalism, towards an Afro-diasporic repair of community…

Is gentrification by 🚲 share and infrastructure really a thing?

A review of research and empirical results from Taipei shows transit improvements can gentrify, but “evidence does not support the hypothesis that equipping bike infrastructure catalyzes gentrification”
(doi.org/10.1016/j.tr...).

Transportation planners, policymakers, modelers, and financiers know about high-occupancy toll (HOT) lanes.

DeCorla-Souza has proposed "HOTTER lanes: lanes reserved for High-Occupancy, Transit, and Tolled vehicles on Existing lanes with Rewards for those who share rides"
