On 15 FEB 1933, Italian immigrant Guiseppe Zangara attempted to assassinate newly elected Pres. FDR in Miami. He failed but wounded 5 people, including Chicago mayor Anton Cermak, who later died. Zangara, unemployed and hated the rich, pled guilty and refused to appeal. He was executed on 20 MAR 33.

The Bonus Army was a group of WW I vets who went to Washington to demand payment of a bonus during the Depression. Congress rejected their demands, so President Hoover sent in the Army to evict the vets and burn the camp using gas, bayonets, and tanks. The response led to Hoover's defeat in 1932.

Oct. 1919, Pres. Woodrow Wilson suffers a severe stroke. He was bedridden and partially paralyzed. Many believe that 1st Lady Edith ran the govt. for the last 17 mos. of his term. She claimed that she never made major decisions and acted only as a steward. The 25th amendment was passed in 1967.

George Lincoln Rockwell founded the American Nazi Party. He coined the expression White Power. He praised Hitler, denied the Holocaust, and believed that MLK was a tool of the Jews, whom he blamed for the civil rights movement. He was shot and killed in 1967 by a former member of the ANP.

Archduke Franz Ferdinand was assassinated by Gavrilo Princip, a Bosnian-Serb member of the Black Hand, on June 28, 1914. As tensions escalated, Austria-Hungary declared war on Serbia a month later. This set off a domino effect of alliances and declarations of war, ultimately leading to World War I.

The Carrington event was the most intense solar flare in history. It peaked around September 1-2, 1859. It was observed by British astronomers Richard Carrington and Richard Hodgson. If it occurred today, it would cause widespread disruptions, blackouts, and damage to the electrical grid.

George Metesky was the "Mad Bomber" who terrorized New York in the '40s and '50s. Over 16 years, he planted 33 bombs citywide, injuring 15 people. He was caught based on clues he left in letters to a newspaper. He was found legally insane and committed to a mental hospital. He was released in 1973.

Ann Hodges is the only known person to be hit by a meteorite. She was taking a nap in her Alabama home on the afternoon of November 30, 1954, when the meteorite came crashing through the roof. It ricocheted off a radio and hit her in the hip, leaving a large bruise. It weighed about 8.5 pounds.

Ball's Pyramid is the remnant of an ancient volcano. It rises 561m above the sea. Discovered in 1788 by Lieutenant Henry Lidgbird Ball, it was unexplored for years due to its sheer cliffs and remoteness. The first recorded ascent was in 1965, when a team led by Bryden Allen successfully scaled it.

Francis Pegahmagabow was a Canadian Ojibwe soldier in WWI. He fought during the entirety of the war and was an effective sniper, one of the deadliest in history. He was awarded the Military Medal with 2 bars. After the war, he would serve as chief and councillor for the Wasauksing First Nation.

Al "Scarface" (a name he hated) Capone is the most famous gangster in US history. He died in 1947 at the age of 48. Cause of death was a heart attack caused by an untreated case of syphilis. Syphilis attacks the organs, especially the liver, heart and brain. It's now easily treated with penicillin.

Kenneth Polsjek, aka Ken Carter, was a Canadian stunt driver. On 5 SEP, 1983, Carter attempted to jump a pond in Peterborough, Ontario. His car, a 1982 Pontiac Firebird fitted with a homemade rocket, overshot the landing ramp due to extra added fuel and landed on its roof, killing him instantly.

Medicare was signed into law by LBJ on July 30, 1965, as part of the Social Security Amendments. It actually went into effect on July 1, 1966. It provided health insurance for Americans aged 65 and older. The first person to sign up was former President Harry Truman, who was 81 y/o at the time.

The Tunguska Event occurred on June 30, 1908, in Siberia. The prevailing theory is something 160-200 ft. wide exploded 3-6 miles above the Earth. The force is an estimated 3-50 megatons of TNT. The shockwave may have registered 5.0 on the Richter scale. It's the largest impact in recorded history.

On this day in 1944, the Allied Expeditionary Force began the largest naval assault and beach landing in history. Known as Operation Overlord, it was commanded by General Dwight D. Eisenhower. His order of the day was distributed to the 175,000-member expeditionary force on the eve of the invasion.

Willard Hershberger is the only MLB player to die by suicide during the season. He was a backup catcher for the Cincinnati Reds in 1940. As a teen, his father shot himself and Willard found him. Willard died in his hotel room on August 3rd. He was 30. The Reds would go on to win the World Series.

Emlen Tunnell was the 1st African American elected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame. He is 2nd all time in interceptions. He also enlisted in the Coast Guard during WWII and twice saved the lives of shipmates. On December 12, 2017, the Coast Guard named it's 45th Sentinel class cutter after him.
