If the Dems retake the House and, paraphrasing Franklin, “keep our Republic”, the question will be, “what will we do with that republic?”

Will we enact policies that protect the environment? That reaffirm the dignity of work? That protect the rights of the most vulnerable in society? What else??

@rokhanna.bsky.social & Rep. Massie forcing the Epstein files issue shows what IMHO many get wrong about Congress. It isn't lack of centrists (neither are), but lack of desire to agree on national problems.

When one does the best solutions come from compromise among diverging views.
Inside the effort to force Trump’s hand on Epstein
Reps. Thomas Massie and Ro Khanna’s months-long campaign to outmaneuver the White House on the Epstein files started with a text.

Despite the near unanimous support among Representatives on the Epstein files law, it was almost exclusively Democrats who forced the vote by supporting the discharge petition. The few brave Republicans who supported the petition deserve credit, but Democrats did this.

the more this is played, the more it sinks in how disgusting Trump's behavior here is
I have no words.

No goddamn words.
Trump suggests Khashoggi had it coming: "You're mentioning someone that was extremely controversial. A lot of people didn't like that gentleman that you're talking about. Whether you like him or didn't like him, things happen. But he knew nothing about it. You don't have to embarrass our guest."

you can remove the gaudy gold ornaments from the White House, but you can never erase the stain to the nation of allowing the murderous MBS to sit in the oval office and laugh while Trump lashes out like a petulant child at reporters.
Q: Why wait for Congress to release the Epstein files? Why not just do it now?

TRUMP: It's not the question that I mind. It's your attitude. I think you're a terrible reporter. It's the way you ask these questions. You start off with a man who's highly respected asking him an insubordinate question

Trump enacted the tariffs without Congress, why would anyone think he'd ask Congress to issue the "dividend" checks?
DEPUTY WH CoS: ".. We will look as hard as possible to see if there’s a way to do it without Congress because we’re circumspect about Congress wanting to stop [them]. .. The law is the law. I think that the most likely outcome is, it requires an act of Congress.”

Don't think Trump actually flipped on Epstein files release. If anything, he'll have DOJ drip those about Dems & stonewall anything related to him.

Telling House 2 vote 2 release was about image. He's more worried about losing a vote today & lame duck stories then being found a pedophile later.

Adding to this tragedy is how close we came to fixing theses issues. All the tools are available and affordable.

We just came under the spell of a megalomaniac.

We were on the cusp of achieving future sustainability..,,

Just because Trump’s cruelty and insanity are affecting you clearly now does not mean he wasn’t this bad since 2015.

He was. He just targeted and exploited more marginalized people.

Impeachment was intended to remove a president who does this. Our founders misunderstood how feckless congress would become when needed most.

Don't discount how much Trump was happy to let the government stay closed (and Americans suffer) so that Johnson had a reason to delay swearing in Rep-elect Grijalva (and provide the last signature for the discharge petition to force a vote on releasing the Epstein files.)

Nothing demonstrates Trump's delusion, recklessness, & sense of invulnerability more than the Epstein files. Trump campaigned to release them, because it fed the pedophilia scare among MAGAites & motivated them. He knows his culpability. He just thinks he can get away with yet another atrocity.

Covering Trump is hard, because his office deserves respect & has been associated with professionalism & maturity. Trump is none of these. So headlines that impute "Trump's strategy" must be pared back to "Trump's actions". There is no strategy, just impulse.

It is the responsibility of the majority party in a legislature or leader in an executive office to run the government. Rs had to find the votes in the Senate - R or D. If that requires D votes, then Rs need to find a passable bill. Rs wouldn't & that created a devastating shutdown.

Then Ds caved.
