French hydro power just had its lowest July output in a decade due to lingering effects of droughts and hot temperatures 🌡️ in the spring and summer 🇫🇷

In contrast, last year had seen some of the highest hydro output in the last decade.

Solar + storage is now $104 per MWh in Las Vegas or similar regions for nearly 100% clean firm power. There is no way new nuclear can compete with this. Even new gas plants will struggle and that is assuming access to cheap gas over the life-cycle of the plant, which is kind of a crazy gamble TBH.

The Senate megabill’s version of the clean electricity investment & production tax credit looks very different from the House version. Geothermal, nuclear, and hydropower will be able to claim incentives well into the 2030s.
Sec. 70512. Phase-out and restrictions on clean electricity production credit. Current Law: Under current law, taxpayers may claim a credit for electricity produced and sold by a qualifying facility. For the purposes of this section, a “qualified facility” is one that is determined to have greenhouse gas emissions less than zero. The value of the credit is 0.3 cents per kWh generally or 1.5 cents per kWh if a taxpayer meets prevailing wage and apprenticeship requirements or exceptions in constructing, repairing, or altering the qualified facility. Taxpayers receive the credit for a 10-year period after a qualified facility is placed in service. To the extent a taxpayer does not have the tax liability to absorb a credit, the credits are eligible to be transferred to an unrelated taxpayer. This credit currently is set to begin phasing out at the later of 2032 or the calendar year in which domestic greenhouse gas emissions from the production of electricity are 25 percent of the amount emitted in 2022. Provision: This provision phases out the clean electricity production credit. For electricity produced by wind or solar technology, the provision begins phasing out in calendar year 2026, with credit values for such qualified facilities the construction of which begins in 2026 receiving only 60 percent of the value of the credit. In 2027, these facilities receive only 20 percent of the credit, and by 2028, there is no longer a production tax credit for these technologies. For all other qualified facilities that generate electricity, such as hydropower, nuclear, and geothermal, the provision phases out as if the “later of” rule did not apply, with these facilities receiving 100 Page 32 of 48 percent of the credit for qualified facilities the construction of which begins in 2033, 75 percent in 2034, 50 percent in 2035, and 0 percent in 2036. The provision also denies the credit for wind and solar leasing to residential customers Sec. 70513. Phase-out and restrictions on clean electricity investment credit. Current Law: Under current law, there is a credit allowed for qualified investment in an electricity facility or energy storage technology. For the purposes of this section, a “qualified facility” is one that is determined to have greenhouse gas emissions less than zero. The value of the credit generally is six percent of qualified investment increased to 30 percent if a taxpayer meets prevailing wage and apprenticeship requirements or exceptions. To the extent a taxpayer does not have the tax liability to absorb a credit the credits are eligible to be transferred to an unrelated taxpayer. This credit currently is set to begin phasing out at the later of 2032 or the calendar year in which domestic greenhouse gas emissions from the production of electricity are 25 percent of the amount emitted in 2022. Provision: This provision phases out the clean electricity investment credit. For investments in wind or solar technology, the provision begins phasing out in calendar year 2026, with credit values for such investments the construction of which begins in 2026 receiving only 60 percent of the value of the credit. In 2027, these Page 33 of 48 investments receive only 20 percent of the credit, and by 2028, there is no longer an investment tax credit for these technologies. For all other qualified facilities, such as hydropower, nuclear and geothermal, the provision phases out as if the “later of” rule did not apply, with these facilities receiving 100 percent of the credit for qualified facilities the construction of which begins in 2033, 75 percent in 2034, 50 percent in 2035 and 0 percent in 2036. The provision has a recapture rule and addresses a flaw in the domestic content bonus structure.

🇳🇴 Norway is supporting the construction of potentially the world’s biggest electric container ships 🚢🔋, amongst other vessels. The two ships, which are capable of carrying 850 containers, will sail between Norway, Sweden and Germany with a 100 MWh battery.

Good morning with good news: Average price of lithium ion battery packs plunged to $115 USD/kWh in 2024, a 20% cost reduction from 2023. and down 84% from a decade ago.

So, battery deployment skyrocketed 67%/year over the last decade to 69 GW in 2024.
