It’s very justifiable if you are familiar at all with the literature, or simply with the philosophy of science as a field. Most things that computer scientists have ever said about the nature of thought is easily dismissed bunk

Saying “you can imagine a machine that can do anything, so it doesn’t matter whether you can imagine a machine that simulates thought” is the exact kind thing of that Quine would say. I have almost certainly read more philosophy than you if you think that statement is anti-intellectual

The only position about consciousness which is backed up by data is that it is far more sophisticated than we have historically understood it to be, and far more sophisticated than any machine we have ever made

Sure, but even more problems arise from purely theoretical discussions as well. You can imagine any kind of computer you want to, it is unlikely to ever exist and every kind of computer that we have made operates on systems that neither logic nor science endorse for simulating consciousness

The topic of conversation was LLMs and their salesmen claiming that they simulate consciousness. If you are talking about some other theoretical technology that doesn’t exist but could simulate consciousness then the issues are present
