Wow that was really racist

That’s a pretty deceptive headline. They’re paying taxes on the money when they receive it, not when they lose it. They’re just not getting as large a tax break for being a moron anymore. Still hilarious

Yeah man the infrastructure to broadly preserve things you deem important can just spring up out of nowhere when The Bad Guys try to bury something. All the other times it’s evil theft and they better not
December 23, 2025 at 4:37 AM
While that is plenty sappy I don’t know that it’s appreciably more so than anything Linus says in A Charlie Brown Christmas that functionally non-practicing Christians endlessly paraphrase to each other this time of year

Reproducible data from cognitive science research also fails to support most of the things philosophers have said and continue to say about the nature of thought.
December 21, 2025 at 8:15 PM
It’s very justifiable if you are familiar at all with the literature, or simply with the philosophy of science as a field. Most things that computer scientists have ever said about the nature of thought is easily dismissed bunk
December 21, 2025 at 8:14 PM
Saying “you can imagine a machine that can do anything, so it doesn’t matter whether you can imagine a machine that simulates thought” is the exact kind thing of that Quine would say. I have almost certainly read more philosophy than you if you think that statement is anti-intellectual

Thus we have no empirical model of what consciousness is or how it works. Anyone who claims otherwise is navel-gazing, ignorant, and/or lying
December 21, 2025 at 8:02 PM
The only position about consciousness which is backed up by data is that it is far more sophisticated than we have historically understood it to be, and far more sophisticated than any machine we have ever made
December 21, 2025 at 8:00 PM
Sure, but even more problems arise from purely theoretical discussions as well. You can imagine any kind of computer you want to, it is unlikely to ever exist and every kind of computer that we have made operates on systems that neither logic nor science endorse for simulating consciousness
December 21, 2025 at 7:46 PM
The topic of conversation was LLMs and their salesmen claiming that they simulate consciousness. If you are talking about some other theoretical technology that doesn’t exist but could simulate consciousness then the issues are present
December 21, 2025 at 7:36 PM
You think the output of these sophisticated random number generators, LLMs, could one day model cognition. That conclusion is not logically sound and scientists do not think it is true
December 21, 2025 at 7:33 PM
The statement “consciousness is not the same thing as a dice roll” is not essentialism. You have made a lot of mistakes of reasoning and research if you think it is, more than can be easily corrected in 300 characters
December 21, 2025 at 7:31 PM
I explained in frank and simple terms the core inadequacies of your argument, since you expressed a supposedly genuine interest in learning something
December 21, 2025 at 7:29 PM
Your reductive attempt to categorize the functions of cognition is neither supported by the limited data we do have nor by logic and analysis
