There are tons of amazing video games that have been forgotten, overlooked or which never found an audience. I'm a researcher who's going through them and finding the Greatest Games You (Probably) Never Played!

I think that's a pretty clear-eyed take.

But also, I don't think enthusiast press critics are very good at evaluating games like Call of Duty because they're thinking about the games in the context of a 20-30 hour review window and not the way people actually play games like it.

I went through the training mode this morning and realized it's scoring you almost entirely on how often you achieve combo multipliers, which is really just a matter of timing.

The problem is the way I play the game is to keep stacks low so I can play longer. So I'll have to adjust!

Valve could fix that, of course, with new Half-Life and Portal and Team Fortress games that all end in the number 3!

Man, I guess I don't need to reenable my subscription!

What a weird choice to make when you're an IP hoarder like Disney

One heck of a great soundtrack, and one heck of a great game!

Yeah, I think you're right! I managed to get up to a B more reliably by bursting more often (still trying to figure the ins and outs of that mechanic out), but I have yet to get an A or S.

Ah well. At least they didn't include the block randomizer from Lumines Electronic Symphony this time!

I haven't been able to understand what it's even grading.

It reminds me of when fighting games started grading me on arbitrary criteria. Show me how to be better, but don't make me feel bad if I play differently from what the designers thought was best!

Lumines Arise is growing on me.

It's definitely NOT the direction I wanted the series to take, because it's a lot bouncier and I feel it's harder to track what's going on (and I HATE being graded after runs).

But the visuals and music are absolutely worth the price of admission!

Or Hollaback Girl, which is one of the most obnoxious Lumines tracks ever!

I had the DOS games as a kid. They are a VERY strong acquired taste.

Mega Man 3 was definitely the better of the two. (There is no DOS Mega Man 2 for... reasons?).

But if I were going for mainline series offshoots, I'd play the arcade games instead. They're way more fun.

Oh man @jcdenden.bsky.social, you've GOT to try Lumines!

I bought it with my PSP (it was a launch title) and poured hundreds of hours into the original. I liked Lumines II even more, and it's basically the same game with different music and skins

It puts me in a meditative state, really and truly

I totally agree. I've been playing both for decades and I'd rather play Lumines any day over Tetris.

Tetris IS a great game. One of the best there is!

But Lumines is a perfect game.

Man, what a cool lady!

One time my (now-departed) grandmother sat down next to my PC and asked me to teach her how to play a game. I was playing Star Wars: Jedi Knight online so I taught her. She didn't do half-bad for someone who wasn't a gamer/Star Wars fan.

I wish more folks were like that.
