I have now listened to/read enough @christianityon.bsky.social that my response to this Simone Weil paragraph was, “Jon is right, give this woman a Gundam.”
The beauty of the world is the mouth of a labyrinth. The unwary individual who on entering takes a few steps is soon unable to find the opening. Worn out, with nothing to eat or drink, in the dark, separated from his dear ones, and from everything he loves and is accustomed to, he walks on without knowing anything or hoping anything, incapable even of discovering whether he is really going forward or merely turning round on the same spot. But this affliction is as nothing compared with the danger threatening him. For if he does not lose courage, if he goes on walking, it is absolutely certain that he will finally arrive at the center of the labyrinth. And there God is waiting to eat him. Later he will go out again, but he will be changed, he will have become different, after being eaten and digested by God. Afterward he will stay near the entrance so that he can gently push all those who come near into the opening.

Again I ALWAYS advise to use group and algorithmic moderation with GREAT caution and usually only in warn mode as I do, but @xblock.aendra.dev as a screenshot labeler is working pretty well.

It rolled-up screenshots you can click to view if you want. Works great and very safe.

McSweeney is exercised by the fact that the civil service has 7,000 communications officers, 4,500 of whom work for arm's-length bodies and quangos and frequently attack what the government is trying to do. Like Dominic Cummings, he is enthused by the possibilities of technology to speed change, such as AI in the NHS or gamers being hired by the Ministry of Defence to fly drones. He is now experimenting with 'synthetic voters' – essentially fake focus groups of AI voters who can tell ministers more quickly and cheaply what the public thinks of policies. In the last week he has been reading The Technological Republic by Alexander Karp, co-founder of the tech firm Palantir, which argues that the West’s technical dominance over the past century has been down to collaboration between governments and tech firms.

Hard agree.

My plan so far has been to bring the Mastodon people along in one big tent but so often when I mention public social media infrastructure people shake their head sadly and say "Oh, yeah, Mastodon… That's never going to work."

We need to somehow unpoison the well.

I'm pretty adamantly against what I refer to as "protocol development as blood sport" but Bluesky/ATProto really needs to be more vocal about how we're *not* like Mastodon/Fediverse because nobody so far has mentioned the latter as a serious contender when the former actually is? #igf2025

I think there's something to this idea; I wonder if there's a way to make it more broadly connected to larger international development goals. ATProto pushes back against censorship. It creates space for marginalised communities. It protects journalism. We need allies outside the tech space.

I think also differentiating ATProto from Twitter is important because some part of me also feels Bluesky being perceived as Yet Another American Tech Company when really it's not! What we're doing with Northsky is a good example of how ATProto is uniquely suited to these challenges. #igf2025
