I should also quickly explain SSI (Supplemental Security Income). That's a program for people who meet disability or age requirements, but who aren't insured by their FICA contributions, or their social security payment is so low that it's not enough to live.

You, as an individual, do not have an "account" with SSA where your FICA contributions have been saved for when you retire. It's not at all comparable to an investment account.
