Keep in mind, parents, teachers, and just educators in general: if those younger than you are smarter, wiser, or more clever than you it means you probably did a good job. Don't be insecure, be happy you raised someone to surpass you. It's not a failure on your part.

Trump's Day One executive orders were a huge gift to to the Big Pharma, Big Tech, Big Oil, and private prison companies who bankrolled his campaign.

The big losers? Ordinary Americans desperate for lower costs.

Remember that science helps us explain how the world is by discovery. This means it can be wrong, it can be corrected, and it still is more reliable than any other method we have. The beauty of living is having fun and discovery is a part of that. Enjoy the mysteries that exist.

Oligarchy (noun): A government of and by a few at the top, who exercise power for their own benefit. Their power and wealth increase as they make laws that favor themselves, manipulate financial markets, and create monopolies that put more wealth into their pockets.

If you think someone is being offensive, ask them about what they mean to be sure. I'm not saying everyone is innocent, but people do make mistakes and sometimes we just say the wrong thing.

However, if someone is consistently offensive with no remorse.... Most likely just a jerk.

If you're afraid of being wrong or mistaken, then you've no place teaching others anything.

The smartest people can explain what they know in the simplest terms. If someone uses a ton of big words towards someone they know isn't in the field they are talking about, chances are they don't know what they are talking about.

What I always hear: “We can’t afford to pay our workers more than $15 an hour.”

What I never hear: “We can’t afford to pay our CEO millions of dollars a year.”

Funny how that works.

Remember: If we allow ourselves to fall into fatalism, or wallow in disappointment, or become resigned to what is rather than what should be, we will lose the long game.

The greatest enemy of positive social change is cynicism about what can be changed.

"Practice what you preach" is a sentiment I don't think people take seriously enough. If you believe people should be nice, then be nice. Even when it's hard or you're feeling hurt or ignored.

Following your ideals is not something only done when it's easy, but also when it's hard.

Like any tool of communication, manipulation is neither good nor bad. It is the intent that defines it. Making a friend game with you to help them feel better is manipulation. But it's considered good. So look to the why instead of just the what. Nuance is everything.

Failure is not a failure. We all fail at something and using that as a metric for value of yourself is unfair. Give yourself a break. What's important isn't if you fail, it's if you try to do better.

So keep at it and forgive yourself for messing things up.

The best stories don't have to be grand tales where you save the world. Sometimes it's just a man finding the courage to stand to a friend. A woman managing to get the job she was after. A child moving to a new house.

The best authors can make all these hit just as hard as saving the world.
