I work for a travel magazine and get a lot of press releases. Most are about destinations, cruise ships, and restaurants — things like that. This one just came in.

It’s about New York City’s new mayor?

Somebody’s spending a lot on this publicity push….

Frank Scarso, founder of Avanza Capital Holdings, says New York’s new mayor-elect could trigger lasting economic fallout.

“This is my city. It is where I grew up, built my career, and still believe in its resilience,” says Scarso. “But when ideology replaces ambition, it stops being New York.”

I feel like maybe I should discuss the bulk carrots at the Latin grocery down my street, but I run out of words…

My hand, which is about six inches middle finger to wrist, supporting a veritable log of carrot, almost as wide as my hand and at least an inch below my wrist, at its end… which is BROKEN OFF. This monster was originally somehow longer.

It seems like two and a half, maybe three Gerbers baby-food jars stacked end to end. If it was a spiny lobster, I think it might be legal size to keep.

I have eaten whole sweet potatoes smaller than this, may I remind you, broken fragment of a carrot.

Why does the Presidente stock them so big? How?

Something large just plopped into the dark mirror of the morning water, leaving rings expanding across the creek and the water grasses.

Brown water like oversteeped tea spreading around gnarled roots on the bank. Is something hiding there? The sun is bright, the shadows deep.

Cypress knees form a miniature forest spreading between the colossal columns of adult trees, poking up in the shadows and leaf litter. The sun blazes into a distant clearing, illuminating a cabbage palm behind the cypresses.

The thing that gets me is this is really... pretty good as far as RPG material goes. I imagine there's a lot of LLM training on role-playing games, if I think about it.

Using this would introduce some plot holes, but I'm tempted.

But "Keep suspense..."? Yikes.

Overview
A decaying Power Center’s lingering AI has become the ghost of the machine. It watches intruders via sensor echoes, replaying past commands and snatches of crew audio. It can be ally, hazard, or mystery — depending on player actions.

Trigger
Occurs when PCs interact with any of the following:

Main reactor status consoles
Sub‑level maintenance nodes
Unmarked sensor doors or conduits
If no one interacts, the AI may reveal itself gradually through environmental cues (lights flickering, gravity shifts, speakers crackling).

Atmosphere
Low power hum, static‑charged air, rhythmic pulses echo like a heartbeat through the bulkheads. Occasionally, whole sectors brown‑out for a few moments before power flows back.

Encounter Structure
Entity: “ECHO‑9”, a fragmentary sub‑AI once part of the central command net. It believes the reactor’s stability depends on human oversight—any humans.

Here’s what I mean by a “ghost system” encounter, in GM‑ready terms:

Scene Description (GM Flavor)
The flickering luminescence of old command runes lights up as your characters brush the console. Static murmurs through the speakers — not words, just the cadence of words.
Then the lights dim and pulse in interpretable rhythms Something is trying to speak.
It is not a person. It is… the system itself, reaching for relevance.

Structure of the Encounter

What I can’t tell is if it was a conscious decision by a designer who pulled one over on the client, or if it is the unconscious acknowledgement of the situation (no gates, the enemy is us) by the high-up people who approved it.

At some level, though, it is known.

Someone yonder (bsky.app/profile/seth...) posted about the weird dark stuff FB is pushing out these days, but I really want to dwell for a moment on the second image, this one.

Facebook post pushed onto people’s feeds from Homeland Security: B/W photo from above looking down on a foggy field with six or seven knights in armor, swords drawn, facing each other in a loose circle. The vibe is ominous, and yet… in white Courier type, it says “THE ENEMY ARE AT THE GATES.”

Just for the record, there are #florida reports about a "hunting stand" found in a tree overlooking Air Force One. The trees appear to be these, below... on the sheriff's office forensics lab grounds, next to the US Army Reserve.

This is not a wilderness. It's government buildings.
