Our mission is to lead on world-class research, policy, training and innovation that supports effective action on climate change.
💡 Using pioneering methods, the team found that in Florida alone:
▪️ 44% ($8.5bn) of Helene’s damages
▪️ 45% ($23bn) of Milton’s
…can be attributed directly to climate change.

What are the true costs of climate disasters?

Following hurricanes Helene and Milton, which in late 2024 tore through the southeastern US, Imperial’s Dr @etheokritoff.bsky.social and researchers answered this question 🧵

Professor @joerirogelj.bsky.social of @ic-cep.bsky.social said:

“The Paris Agreement sets a clear expectation for high ambition, but there is currently no clear way to measure and assess that ambition.

“We have developed a framework to fill that gap [...] and hold governments accountable.”

SUVs also increase air pollution.

In Europe’s urban areas, air pollution from non-exhaust emissions (ie, tyres, brakes, and road wear) now dominates particulate matter pollution and may be important contributors to chronic illnesses and premature mortality.

Carspreading is also an obstacle to achieving climate and air quality goals.

Counting cars and SUVs together, around 80% of all new sales run exclusively, or partly, on fossil fuels, while 20% are all electric.

Those who walk or cycle face a cohort of new cars each year that are becoming wider and taller (and more dangerous).

These vehicles reduce the space for cyclists to move safely beside them and make it harder to achieve an increase in active travel and the public health benefits it entails.
November 6, 2025 at 4:00 PM
In the UK, SUVs accounted for 63% of new sales in 2024.

The proliferation of SUVs is one aspect of “carspreading,” whereby cars are becoming steadily larger over time and with this comes potential harms to health 🧵

3. Climate pledges should account for how different climate actions impact each other and be possible in the near future.
November 6, 2025 at 2:07 PM
2. Internationally, climate pledges should support the achievement of the Paris Agreement temperature goals in an equitable way.
November 6, 2025 at 2:07 PM
The paper outlines three key pillars for assessing countries' pledges:

1. Countries’ climate pledges should be based on a fair assessment of their national emission reduction options.

The scale of emissions cuts required in a short amount of time means that an overshoot of 1.5°C will now happen, very likely in the next decade.

The authors say that the pursuit of efforts to limit warming to 1.5°C remains critical in order to minimise the impacts of overshoot. [2/3]

NEW: The latest climate pledges under the Paris Agreement have driven only a slight fall in predicted global temperature rise over the course of this century.

The UN Emissions Gap Report finds that implementing current policies would lead to up to 2.8°C of warming, down from 3.1°C. 🧵

Imperial College London and Earthwatch Europe are calling on the UK government to implement stricter regulations for environmental risk assessment of pet medications like imidacloprid and restrict blanket preventative use of flea and tick treatments in the UK.
November 4, 2025 at 12:23 PM
When the data collection is complete, it will be the largest dataset of its kind, with over 200,000 measurements from across the entire United Kingdom.

This includes highlighting areas with the worst (and best) contamination.
November 4, 2025 at 12:23 PM
The research was led by Imperial's Professor Leon Barron with Dr @helenarappwright.bsky.social and Earthwatch Europe's Dr Sasha Woods, Laura Bannatyne, Steven Loiselle and Kevin Simmonds.

Earthwatch also enrolled 5000 citizen scientists with over a thousand sampling kits to test the UK’s waterways.

The insecticide imidacloprid, banned for agricultural use but still applied in spot-on flea and tick treatments for pets, posed the highest risk to aquatic invertebrates, according to the scientists.

COP30 in Brazil will be a critical test of global leadership and must be a moment of pushback against the wrecking tactics we’ve seen on climate, said Dr Gro Harlem Brundtland of @theelders.bsky.social at the 2025 Grantham Institute Annual Lecture this week 🧵

🤝Integrating mental health support into climate change strategies offers an opportunity to build public resilience.
October 31, 2025 at 10:49 AM
😞"Eco-emotions" stem from prolonged exposure to climate change-related issues, including grief and guilt over environmental damage and anxiety about future climate-related hazards.

Without support, these experiences can worsen mental health and wellbeing.
October 31, 2025 at 10:49 AM
⚠️ Direct impacts include anxiety, stress, and trauma from floods and droughts, and increased risks of suicide and symptoms of mental health disorders from heat and air pollution.
October 31, 2025 at 10:49 AM
🌡️ Climate change-related increases in temperature and extreme weather pose current and future risks to public mental health in the UK.

🧠Vulnerable populations face heightened mental health risks.
