It’s locker room talk transformed into millions of WhatsApp groups. The stuff men “joke” about is just yeesh and they’ll go oh shit we invited the wrong Paul into our… girls in bikinis group… Like Hegseth inviting the journalist into DoW Signal chat.

@Felienne s weekly AI in education newsletter asks some good questions, and highlights important nuances.

Full of good quotes, and, for me, a slightly different viewpoint.

"The main problem with AI for me is that it's a red herring, something everyone is talking about, and where […]

"It’s not just Epstein. That’s what we now have to realise. Obsessive, pervasive sexual interest in teenage girls - and to some degree, boys - is threaded insistently through our culture.

We just choose to ignore it. We redact it. It’s a darkness that we cover with more darkness.

Are we going […]

The Cape Floral Kingdom. What a fantastic name. Conjures in my mind a Shakespearean image of Titania and Oberon and A Midsummer Night's Dream.

Some scientists want to call it a phytochorion, or a region. Take away your diminishing and Latinate garbage, forsooth. It is a KINGDOM. It has […]

Helping a school counsellor set up some issue reporting forms.
@liberaforms has the smoothest, safest, implementation for setting up public/ private keypairs I have used. With a great verification step! A backup is not tested until you have restored it!

I'm looking for key management software like #gpg / Kleopatra for use by a school counsellor, for managing key pairs that will encrypt confidential information in various systems.

It _must_ run on WIndows _and_ macOS, and be usable by a tech literate and able social worker. No "install Linux" […]

I have strong moral objections to bribery, yet I've paid bribes to cops. My children were in the car to see me do it. I've carried that guilt for many years now..

And it suddenly struck me, 2 hours ago, that there's a difference between a bribe, offered to an official, and extortion, where the […]

I want my skills sharp, kept sharp by looking things up and thinking for myself, the same way walking everywhere keeps me healthy.

I'm enriched by the random things I learn and random skills I pick up while doing so.

Most of all, I don't want my entire life, mind, and experience reduced to the […]

Something snapped into place in my mind. There is an anti-AI position that has absolutely nothing to do with luddism, or any other anti-tech position.

AI is cognitive suburbanization.

Think about it. Architecting everything so that I can't do even the most basic thing without gratuitously […]

2 - DNS that protects the mail server from being […]

In the Mastodon app when you click on a profile, you get "posts" "posts & replies" and "media". What it really needs is a 4th one, which is posts without boosts. Boosts are critical to the fediverse working (one of the reasons I boost a lot). But if you're looking for something a user wrote […]

One thing that's tough for people who just join the Fediverse, like most of the folks on #theforkiverse , is that there are self-appointed experts who reply to their public posts saying that "the Fediverse" doesn't like that kind of content.

This is untrue. They don't speak for all of us […]

Printed these models of the #lco 1m to help the kids make sense of the mounts. They both articulate in RA and Dec.

** I don't believe it's fair

Assessment tells me more than 'she got a 72, very good.' It tells me what they're thinking, how they responded to teaching, whether they can keep up, which bits of class didn't land.

Good assessment and grading is part of good pedagogy. AI fucks that relationship up.
