The Siddoway family's historic sheep ranch operating for over a century in the alpine ranges of Idaho and Wyoming. grandtetonlamb.com
We produce 50 pounds of meat per acre utilizing 5% of the forage on one day each year. Back in 1904, there were 1,000,000 sheep where we currently have 25,000, so historic production was probably around a ton.

Our sheep graze on grasslands, forests, and croplands. The sheep prefer and thrive in forest systems. In my area (Idaho-Wyoming), forests produce a lot of food.

We did farmers markets for the first time this year. The grandkids helped. It was not a big revenue generator (1-2k/day), but we we picked up wholesale clients and new customers for our online store. It should pay off over time. We direct-sell 2,000 head and auction 5,000.

Consider replacing some of the beef in your diet with lamb. We don't need to remove trees for our lambs to graze because sheep prefer alpine forbs to grass. Also, lambs do not require cropland feed to overwinter because of their faster maturity rate. grandtetonlamb.com

I am a fifth generation sheep rancher.

Although we raise sheep, it takes eighty horses to keep the ranch running. Come see us if you are near Yellowstone or Grand Teton National Parks. #sheep #ranching #Yellowstone #grandtetonlamb

Do people selling food actually get turned away from farmers markets? The organizers in my area are always looking for more vendors.
November 16, 2024 at 2:25 PM
Um. Most farmers are land rich and cash poor. The tax requires farmers to sell land to pay the tax. That means less open space and more environmental degradation - not to mention less local food production. Justifies a think.

The article states the Sri Lankan government did not have adequate natural fertilizer or a plan to get it. Obviously, soil nutrients need to be replenished. Organic farming needs grazers. #sheep #transhumance #regenerative #sustainable
