This acoustically reproducing 30s portable has a uniquely mains and spring powered motor. Subsequently sold under the name “Dual,” this German hybrid motor became such a success that the company rebranded itself to the motor’s name. Dual would become a global player in postwar Hi-Fi turntables.

An early 1930s UK Columbia 202 Viva-Tonal Grafonola. The 202 was the top of Columbia’s mid tier gramophone offerings. Utilizing designs dated prior to the EMI merger with rival HMV, this model evolved through the 30s gradually incorporating HMV components until its retirement just before WWII.

On this day 88 years ago, Robert Johnson was finishing his first recording session (he only managed two). Between Nov 23 and 25, 1936, in room 414 of the Gunter Hotel in San Antonio, he laid down 16 tunes, inc Terraplane Blues and Cross Road Blues. Rock n roll was born, history was made.

One of the most famous portable gramophones, this model 2 Decca is in the IWM. A clipping from the US talking machine trades describes its service in the tranches.

For this reason many reflector bowl horn gramophones are erroneously thought of as “trench gramophones,” Decca marque or not.
