Today was our final post-ex day, where we explored #osteoarchaeology.

We took a deep dive into the excavation of the early med. Bowl Hole cemetery, which sits just outside the castle.

This pm we were then joined by osteo, Giselle Kiraly, who taught us the basics of osteoarch.

A fascinating day!

This afternoon we continued our exploration of the early medieval period with Paula Constantine.
We had the opportunity to try different clothe making techniques and understand the different natural materials and tools used in the production of early medieval textiles 🤩🧶🏺 2/2

As we come to the end of another dig at Bamburgh, perhaps the most interesting discovery is that the timber lining to the well extends beneath a very likely medieval wall!

A red deer mandible! It came out of our #midden. This is one of the largest species of #deer, and one of two native to Britain, the other being the roe deer which is tinier. #zooarchaeology

A view of the trench this morning. Work goes on with leveling our sondage across the possible ditch, excavating our midden, and some recording via plan.

Jack is excavating a sondage (mini-trench) next to the wall stump to give us a better idea of whether it's partially #medieval and #Victorian, or simply mostly Victorian. We have gotten some green glazed pottery sherds! #13thcentury

We're painstakingly working our way through the Hope-Taylor archive from #Bamburgh Castle excavated in the early 70's to help incorporate them with the @brparchaeology.bsky.social archive.

As a Co-director of the Bamburgh Research Project we are slowly shifting our efforts towards more post-ex focussed work and training.

Last week we had the opportunity to begin our reassessment of the Hope-Taylor archive, which we are working to incorporate into our own so we can report on both 1/2🏺
