Ex wine trade, ex rail industry. Music - especially prog rock; ⚽- especially Man Utd and Salford City; cricket - Lancashire; food; wine; reading; walking; photography. Based in Thornton, Lancs.
No time wasters please
On the left is the pre 2014 crest for Salford City FC; centre is the current crest; and on the right is the proposed new crest which keeps the lion figure (part of the city of Salford's crest) and proudly brings back the red rose of Lancashire. I'm not sure whether I'll vote for or against

Sorting through my digital photos this year and it was surprising how few I took in January. I can't remember the weather being so bad that I wasn't out more than a few days that month but here's January's Photo, the Irish Sea from Cleveleys

Four years ago I read of the sudden death of friend and vocalist with the band Big Big Train David Longdon.
Today I've just heard the news about the death of Mani of The Stone Roses and once of Primal Scream. RIP to both of these fine, talented musicians as well as being decent, down to earth guys

I can't credit the unknown photographer but I'm remembering his/her subject, the remarkably talented Mr David Longdon who suddenly and very sadly passed on this day in 2021 #DavidLongdon #bigbigtrain #progress #wildriver #doorone

#19 on the reading list for 2025. I'm really unsure how to categorise this one - social history? Regional politics in historical context? Community psychoanalysis? Humour?
It's actually all four (and more) rolled into one informative, somewhat biased and frankly disturbing book. Eye-opening for sure

Currently reading Blood, Sweat and Asparagus Spears by Andrew Turvil. Ex editor of The Good Food Guide Turvil looks back at the 1990s which is widely regarded as a decade of great change to not only the UK restaurant scene but also to the British attitude of dining out. The beans have been spilled

Lightpool has returned to Blackpool and heralds a long awaited return of the heritage trams. Last night it was the turn of 717 'balloon car' tram Walter Luff to glide alongside the Illuminations between Pleasure Beach and Bispham. For an hour I was 9 years old again

Was this really thirteen years ago? My second holiday in the Veneto took me to Torcello, Murano and this colour-rich island Burano. While back home Manchester United were handing the Premier League title to their noisy neighbours I was enjoying a few of the finer things in life

Star billing at the International Bookshop at Termini, Rome for The Proof Of My Innocence earlier this week. You're in very prestigious company @jonathancoe.bsky.social

With the emergence of Mark Billingham's Declan Miller series of books I have recently been neglecting his DI Tom Thorne ones and as Mark is giving Miller a holiday 2025 is going to be Thorne Catch Up Year. I'm starting with 2017's Love Like Blood:

My first book of '25 was finished last night.
@jonathancoe.bsky.social's new novel The Proof Of My Innocence is partly a reboot of What A Carve Up! which put Thatcherism under the surgeon's knife and partly a melange of different genres. Liz Truss and Kwasi Kwarteng are among the lesser characters

Before I retired January was one of our preferred holiday months - somewhere warmer than Manchester, cheapish and relaxing. Madeira or one of the Canary Islands were the norm. Then in January 2022 we moved to our retirement home in Thornton - cheapish, relaxing and (usually) warmer than Manchester

The Gardeners' Arms, Thornton Cleveleys: still rejoicing at Euro '24 while struggling against Storm Bert with a deflated Grinch and a decidedly underdecorated tree

Exhibit 1: Victoria Road, Cleveleys. The bollards - most with crocheted cosy toppers stretch the length of this section

This time last year Doreen and I were on the first day of a week in Paphos. Our hotel, the King Evelthon was a few miles out of town and a bit isolated but the pavements, on the whole made it easy for us (Doreen was in a manual wheelchair) to get around without having to rely too much on buses

Here's my current reading, my twentieth book so far this year. It's Alan Garner in top form; collected thoughts, poems, an early short story and plenty of reminiscing.

Two years ago today Doreen and I had a peruse of the newly opened Christmas By The Sea at Blackpool Tower headland before going in search of Bentleys Fish and Chips restaurant on South Shore. Doreen loved the traditional fare around here and Bentleys soared into our Top Five Chippies.
