But we have to do what we can in this moment to put pressure on them. Our champion, Congresswoman Delia Ramirez, is fighting hard for healthcare in Congress.

I remember how excited I was when the Affordable Care Act passed. Republicans are trying to take the whole system apart, piece by piece—from the Medicaid cuts in July to shutting down the government and starving children to end healthcare subsidies.

You all know healthcare has been the fight of my life. As an organizer, state senator, mutual aid practitioner, and human, I have fought for policies that keep us well.

What has happened to our healthcare system in the last several months has been awful.

This is not the country we deserve, nor the government we should get in return for all of our hard work.

They are hosting a fundraiser at Alps in Irving Park this weekend, where 25% of sales will go to support Felix and his family. The money will also help them pay for living expenses while they navigate this ordeal.

His family needs to raise thousands of dollars as soon as possible to secure a lawyer to fight this unjust detention.

Owner Robert Magiet will be cooking meals with turkey, stuffing, cranberry, dinner rolls, and mashed potatoes. Volunteers will be helping drop off the meals or prepare them for pickup.

This is what fascism does: It targets our most vulnerable at their most vulnerable. And it is heartbreaking.

But our community did what our community does, and we fought back. We fundraised, we showed up at court, and we leveraged our connections in government. We won.

I am sick with rage and grief nearly all of the time these days at what is happening to our people, but never does it hurt more than when I think of what it is doing to our children and our babies.

Even with the terror and violence we have been subjected to on a daily basis, it was shocking to see government-funded kidnappers follow a member of our community into a daycare and drag her out—in front of children.

This was a WIN for our city and statewide coalition that is putting everything they have against ICE and against fascism. I am grateful every day to live among people who are hopeful and who believe they can make a difference and then make it true.

Nevertheless, in the face of unchecked authoritarianism, we have thrown everything we have at it. And because of that, hundreds of people will get to see their families again this week. Those detained have been our mothers, our grandmothers, our aunts, our uncles, people who are part of the fabric of this community. They should have never been kidnapped in the first place.

I love my neighbors. I love this city. That will be true long after these fascists freaks have left this place. Signing bonuses paid for with screams of terror and pain have NOTHING on the soul of this city.
