Working on a literary project to commemorate the 2011 Tohoku tsunami in Japan I started in 2017....long story, but now I'm trying to finish it! 2026 will be 15 years on. While deleting my facebook, I'm downloading all my high school photos from Japan and it's really taking me back to those times. ⛩️
KINDRED by Octavia Butler is an excellent book...my book club pick. It is a first person slave narrative written from the POV of a Black woman married to a white man in 1976 who keeps getting pulled back in time to the slave plantation in 1816 in the US antebellum south where her ancestor was born.

This year I've been really into reading horror...partly because I love it and partly to get inspiration for a future novel project I have in mind. THE HUNGER is a supernatural reimagining of the Donner Party tragedy. Completely terrifying, fantastic, and leaves lots to discuss!

My employer (Emissions Reduction Alberta) is launching a $50M challenge to cleanup oilsands tailings. There is an excellent graphic novel called DUCKS that touches on tailings - but bear in mind it takes place 20 years ago and things have evolved. I wrote a goodreads review about it.. link in bio.

My short story THE ENGINEER, published last year by Capital City Press Anthology Volume IV, now has an audio link so you can listen as you drive. It's about a geologist's night shift on a lonely oil rig that gets interrupted by an unexpected visitor. capitalcitypress.wordpress.com/2024/07/02/t...

Fun fact I learned this week: ChatGPT consumes 1/2 a liter of water with every series of prompts you put into it. www.aiaaic.org/aiaaic-repos...

Podcast time! I interviewed oilsands producer Strathcona Resources about their plans for carbon capture to reduce >80% of emissions. It won't happen overnight, and sure will face sebacks, but they've made tons of progress and I'm super excited about this project.

Here's a great little podcast about why there's a shortage of lifesaving nuclear isotopes in the UK (and worldwide) right now and how to fix it, sound climate wisdom from Jane Goodall, and some validation that AI can't write good poetry... #nuclear #nuclearmedicine

Every family has a person or people who dig into the history stuff. In my family, one of those people is me. It is so fascinating but so much work. If someone in your family does this, help them! I've been digging into ancestry.ca today for the first time. It's a pretty cool tool for collaboration.
