Br. Abraham - monk of St. Gregory's Abbey (a Benedictine monastery in the Episcopal Church) - I love Jesus and all of you. I have fun with IndyCar, the Silmarillion, the Fantastic Four, and the B52s
⚓We clothed a novice after vespers this evening (Feast of All Saints Benedictine.) The new monk took the name "Br. Julian."

⚓Please keep our postulants in your prayers, that they may find the deep joy of monastic life, and that the novicemaster (me) does not impede them in their 5 1/2 year journey to life vows.

⚓St. Augustine's Church in Gary, Indiana recently had an historical marker installed, mentioning us. We are honored to be a part of this congregation's story.

monastic wisdom?
Whenever we get upset, we should ask ourselves: "which is worse: the situation, or my drama/reaction to it?"

We often use Eucharistic Prayer C. It is OK, except for the fact that it does not mention opposable thumbs. What good is being blessed with "memory, reason, and skill" if you don't have opposable thumbs?

Representatives from the several retreat centers in our neighborhood meet regularly for mutual support. During Easter Week, the meeting was here at the abbey in St. Benedict's Guesthouse in the woods overlooking the lake.

As we stress out about getting Holy Week and Easter "right", let us remember the words of Our Lord:
"I have come that ye might have rubrics, and have them in abundance."

We love all of you!

Once, a monk had a periodic table of the elements taped to his wall next to a crucifix. He said that both images worked together to remind him of the amazing, infinite love of God.

No need to get stressed about rules or steps in lectio divina. Just read the Bible with an open heart and mind, allowing the Holy Spirit to speak as and when the Holy Spirit sees fit. And stick with it. Just my thoughts - I could be wrong.

monastic wisdom?
We do not observe monastic practices in order to make God love us or to earn salvation. We observe monastic practices in gratitude for God's love and salvation already freely given to all.

Week of Prayer for Christian Unity
The majority of guests here at the monastery are not Episcopalian (even though all the monks are.) Friendships are formed and bridges built. We are grateful to have been given this ecumenical ministry.

The Week of Prayer for Christian Unity begins Saturday.

If Jesus had wanted his followers to be united, he would have said something about it!

The upcoming observance of the Naming and Circumcision of Jesus (January 1) often gets lost in all the surrounding holidays, but it is important because it reminds us that common human names, body parts, and customs are good enough for God. - Br. Abraham (St. Gregory's Abbey) #tec

If the idea of practicing humility is difficult because of an association with low self esteem, maybe try 'proactive humility': "I am a beautiful, wonderful Child of God and have infinite worth, JUST LIKE EVERYONE ELSE."

May we use this season of Advent to make enough room in our lives for Jesus to be born in us.
