The fact that he never mentions Jack Vance in his list of influences on the game makes me doubt everything he writes here ... "Halflings," Rangers, orcs, etc etc etc? Coincidence, Gygax says. Their game pillaged from lots of writers, Tolkien (and Vance) included.

If you want to write FOR PUBLICATION then you need to accurately and thoughtfully compare your OWN WORK to what's CURRENTLY BEING PUBLISHED, there is no way to get around it, sorry. There just is not!

I recently read “Stone Yard Devotional” and it’s a great example. The stakes are so small - a woman joins a convent and lives there - and the implications are so profound.
