This afternoon, in addition to Charlie Kirk, there was a school shooting. Bullets don't know and don't care if you are a Republican or Democrat. It is time for Republicans and Democrats to find a way to work together to reduce gun violence.

Just bringing this back around.
This will never not be relevant, I fear.

Just zero subtlety.

Awesome.
40% of Missourians vote for Democrats, and this is the Congressional map the Republicans are pushing for.

Know what your staff want for a "staff appreciation day/week?"

A raise.

More time separates Julius Caesar and Shakespeare than separates Shakespeare and you.

I mean, this is pretty easy to see, but hs students don't (in my experience) really think to contextualize those things for themselves. It's just, "They're all super old."
What’s something that’s a banal observation in your field, but which really blows students’ minds the 1st time they encounter it?

I’ll go 1st—when we talk about how technological history gets narrated & I say "no human being has ever lived in a historical period—they’ve only lived in the present"

Students reading Shakespeare: "Why do we have to read in Old English?"
Me: "This is Early Modern English, actually."
Students: *minds blown*
Me: *pulls up Beowulf or Lord's Prayer* "This is Old English."
Students: "That doesn't even look like recognizable."

"Knight" and "knife" are spelled that way because
1. Those letters weren't always silent
2. French influence
3. Writing is the most conservative form of a language and thus the most resistant to change (see "through" vs "thru, "night" vs "nite," etc.)

it is grimly hilarious that, given the immense, decades-long fetishization of "leadership" and "leadership skills" in business-oriented academia and politics, even unto the formation of leadership institutes, there should turn out to be no leaders in any positions of power

No it absolutely does fucking not.

Here's your reminder that serving on a Board of Education is a political appointment. It doesn't mean you know jack shit about education. But, you know, clearly the founder of Silver Dollar City is an education expert.
