Big dad guy. GIS, spatial data, maps, and public lands by trade. Disc golf and a good beer keep me occupied. SciFi escapist. COYS by choice
True legends of the map world, - Tom Patterson, Cindy Brewer, and Judith Tyner - were the last people left standing at the @nacis.bsky.social conference attendance count check. All with 35+ years.

Shout out to @mapcenter.com for a fun #NACIS2025 *Impractical Cartography* talk. I’m hoping to make it by the shop at some point!

Cartographic expertise and seemingly effortless rapport between @kennethfield.bsky.social and @johnnelsonmaps.bsky.social on display again at their #ESRIUC How Maps Work session. I’m glad i gave Ken a little extra joke fodder as a Spurs fan as well.

#ESRIUC: where my fashion envy peaks. The topo patterned shirts and map collage jackets are out in full force pre-plenary.

An absolutely absurd move that any wildlife professional (and most any person) would tell you makes zero sense.

Habitat harm == species harm

I’d really rather not know the amount of time I’ve stressed over why some AGOL app isn’t working for a user, only to find out I just hadn’t updated the sharing settings on my end…

As #NCGIS 2025 kicks off this morning, a reminder that folks in our state are extremely fortunate to have excellent geospatial data available to them. Looking forward to a great conference.

Similar boat for me. I (and ~6% of men) have deuteranopia and struggle with certain shades of green looking more red. These kinds of line charts are the most notable culprit for highlighting the issue.

Great suggestion for working around the problem here, as well.
I’m colorblind, and I tend to think #dataviz people make too big a deal trying to make colorblind friendly data visualizations.

But every so often, I do come across one I struggle to read and I thought I’d start sharing when I do.

Down below is one from the Economist I can’t read well.

Federal salaries are 4% of the budget, so this is not about money.

But even if it were, this playbook from Tech is moronically applied to Feds, who don’t have big salaries and tranches of equity to hold over their heads.

So either Musk is absurdly dumb or he’s trying to make our government fail

Things I like: copying a tiny bit of code, changing one or two parameters, and it runs!
Things I dislike: when it doesn't.

First and only PL game: Spurs at Leicester, Aug 22, 2015. Dele scored his first for Spurs and I experienced the glory that is the Tottenham away end. Glad i didn’t let anyone tell me a day trip from London to Leicester was too far.

Also, got this gem of a picture. This guy was a blast all match.

I go to one cartography conference and I get the grand idea that I can design a full spread map for the Wildlife in NC magazine…
