This is but my opinion on the matter, others will have other opinions for sure but tldr: don't beat yourself up as a trans person, I thought it was executed very tastefully

You all didn't know at the time about the slur potential which went from wide community use to slur usage around 2007 but wasn't super popularized after "hot tr@nny mess" went viral, but imo I think you all stumbled upon a very funny joke.

Not being trans yourself I don't think you understand how rare clever trans jokes are, about as rare as a unicorn, both varieties. So having a clever joke, not in bad faith in my favorite show actually made it so much better. It's a thin line for sure but in my opinion I think you all nailed it.
