Prior to The Calamity the Xaela of the Azim Steppe revered three Celestial beings: Azim, the Dawn Father; Nhaama, the Dusk Mother; and Dalamud, Nhaama's Ever-Faithful Hound. It was common for Nhaama myths to contain some depiction of Dalamud, either as a loyal livestock guard dog, or an imposing bodyguard. It should be stated that Dalamud as the loyal hound is not an uncommon concept. Oftentimes one could find many an Eorzean praising Menphina's loyal hound or, later, cursing her damned mutt.

Yet, during the Calamity, many interpretations spread across the Steppe. Stories of the Lambs of Dalamud cult occasionally made their way across the Sea of Jade and The Bounty, leading some to share their beliefs. For the Kagon, Dalamud was finally released from her chains and set upon the foe, a show of force by Nhaama. For the Dalamiq, she was liberated from her controlling mistress, and set off to wander the realms freely. Some Dotharl believed that her time as a hound had come to an end, and she would yet return to the Steppe, mortal, as would Nhaama herself.

Regardless of these theological differences, the devastating effects of the Calamity were largely contained to Aldenard and the memory of Dalamud waned. By the time the Orl tribe attempted migration to Coerthas, none but fringe believers spoke of Dalamud.

Depicted here is a less common interpretation, Dalamud as Nhaama's lover. This was likely created circa the Calamity, as Dalamud is depicted with red hair and fur, a change fueled by the reddening of Dalamud as it descended upon The Star. Prior to the Calamity, Dalamud was most often shown as a black dog.

Nhaama has also been depicted in her pre-Calamity form, as a Celestial archer, equipped for battle. Later depictions of Nhaama lend more towards her mystical powers, and closely resemble the Dusk Throne. This interpretation can be seen in the ceremonial garb of the Kagon tribe's Khatun.

As grazing land is scarce and highly competitive in the desert, most Kagon will hunt for their food. However, due to their poor daylight vision, they rely on the help of sharp-eyed and well-trained eagles to catch game as large as gedan, or the occasional young baras.
