I mean just play the Ravens/Steeelers game right now. That's an AFC North sky if I've ever seen one.

295 Sports Minute - The Hurricanes were simply the better team than the Caps over the course of this series. Carolina carried played, won the special teams battle, got a better goaltending performance & shut down the Caps top scorers. Now, the question is what can the Caps do about it this summer?

295 Sports Minute - Reacting to the Commanders' schedule.

The Commanders are finally a national draw again & the schedule reflects it. America is going to see a lot of Jayden Daniels & this team in '25. There's one thing the Commanders will have to do that nobody else in the NFL will... #RaiseHail

295 Sports Minute - Reacting to the Ravens' schedule.

At this point, there's not much the Ravens can prove in the regular season, but making it through this gauntlet is the first necessary step if they're going to achieve the ultimate goal. #RavensFlock

295 Sports Minute - Monday night will be remembered as one of missed opportunities for both the Wizards & the Caps.

295 Sports Minute - Rings in the room is a cliche we hear all the time in hockey, but when the Caps needed it most Tom Wilson & John Carlson, a couple of the guys with rings in the room, elevated their play and gave the Caps exactly what they needed to tie the series with the Hurricanes.

295 Sports Minute - Reacting to the Caps Game 1 loss to the Hurricanes.

Carolina dominated all facets of the game & in a weird way it actually reminded me of some playoff games from early in the Ovi era. Is there something the Caps can learn from an old playoff foe?

295 Sports Minute: The Capitals kick off their second-round Stanley Cup Playoff series against the Hurricanes tonight and I think the key matchup is the Caps power play vs the Canes penalty kill.

What do you think has to happen in this series for the Caps to advance?

Buzz Williams' early decisions indicate he is prioritizing doing things his way with his guys. The question now is will it pay dividends on the scoreboard? If he wins big Terps fans will love him, but if he struggles early this approach may stoke the flames of anger for a fan base thin on patience.

I asked Southeastern 16's Blake Lovell what it says about Buzz Williams that Andre Mills and George Turkson redshirted at Texas A&M last season, something rarely done in power conference college basketball these days, and then followed him to Maryland. Here's what he had to say...

First time out at the yard in 2025. Finally feels like spring!

What if Moses Malone had gone to Maryland?
What if Carlos Boozer had been called for his fifth foul instead of Lonny Baxter?
What if Kevin Garnett had gone to Maryland?
What if it hadn't been an open secret Kevin Willard was taking the Villanova job?
March 28, 2025 at 4:04 AM
Kevin Willard may not view Maryland as a destination job & I know this place has its warts, but I promise you Maryland is special. There are very few places in the country where basketball is as culturally important. With the right coach & right investment the sky's the limit.

When you watch Grand Canyon play, you start to realize they are really the antithesis stylistically of what we typically think about as the pesky mid major. They have a ton of size, length and athleticism, but aren't a great three-point shooting team.
March 17, 2025 at 10:10 PM
Are you worried about Maryland's ability to win close games as they head into the NCAA Tournament?

Despite some high-profile last second losses, the Terps are actually 9-8 in games decided by less than 10 points this season.

Maryland is up to No. 9 in the NET and top 12 in all the predictive metrics listed on the team sheet after last night's blowout win. A No. 3 seed is there for the taking!
March 15, 2025 at 2:30 PM
Tomorrow on I'll have a full episode of The Route 1 Rundown where I break down Maryland's loss to Michigan State, but for tonight I can only come up with one word to describe Holloman's shot, that game and the feeling I had walking out of Xfinity Center: devastating.

If you so much as set foot in College Park between 2006-2010, you probably have a great Greivis Vasquez story. Matt Modderno shared his on the latest Episode of The Route 1 Rundown.

Maryland won't be in the selection committee's top 16 reveal today, but something to watch is where Texas Tech lands.

From SOS to the predictive metrics outperforming the results-based metrics, there are a lot of similarities. A positive view of TTU could mean the same for MD.

Over the last six games Maryland's Ja'Kobi Gillespie is averaging 18.5 points, 6.3 assists & 2.7 steals per game. Could Gillespie end up as a first team All-Big Ten player?
January 28, 2025 at 8:10 PM
15 minutes to tip off. I don't think it's going to be a packed house. Terps have to bring their own energy with what will likely be a lackluster home crowd.

CFP thread for the day...

Guess turnovers matter, huh? The game is essentially even on the stat sheet outside of the two PSU pick sixes.
December 21, 2024 at 6:03 PM
Maryland basketball is 9-2, top 20 in Kenpom & top 10 in the NET rankings, but are the Terps good enough to win the Big Ten?

If the answer to these five questions is "yes," then I think they can win a pretty wide open league this season.

Is Indiana's Kurtis Rourke the best starting QB in the College Football Playoff?

Rourke and Oregon's Dillon Gabriel are the only QBs in the field with both an ESPN QBR rating & a PFF offensive grade in the top 10.

Red zone numbers for the CFP teams (courtesy of cfbstats.com):

Ohio State is top 5 in both red zone TD % and opponent red zone TD %.

UGA and PSU are in the top 25 in both metrics.

SMU is 113th in opponent red zone TD % and ASU is 101st.
