Many people are unaware that there were black sailors in the Royal Navy during the age of sail. If you mention it they assume you must have searched desperately to find some representation.

A wonderful belt buckle dating to the late 4th or early 5th century, it was excavated at Catterick Roman Fort. It comprises of a pair of seahorses and an upright dolphin at either end. The curators report states that it was probably from the belt of an officer

It's easy to view history in a detached sort of way, just an abstract series of dates and events, but I've had a lot of comments on my Elizabeth Howe video from her descendants, and it really struck me that it's never just something that happened a long time ago. It's real.
