Or they may have been far too young, or experienced so much suffering in their lives. It can be a lot to sit with that sadness sometimes. But it’s also a privilege to have known them and cared for them. I try to remember that on days like today where it feels especially heavy.

I thinking holding on to that compassion, empathy & even grief - allowing yourself to feel that sadness - is part of what makes a good nurse. But some instances really hurt - for whatever reason - maybe you had a good rapport with them, or they reminded you of your own mum.

I do understand - if you were to get too attached and too sad each time a patient dies, you wouldn’t last long working in the health sector, as you’d burn out and your own mental health would suffer. But I think we wouldn’t be human if we didn’t form attachments or feel sad when they pass.
