People have been asking for action items. Yes!

There is one very important action for everyone for the next 10 days: Demand your Senators bring the Senate to a halt. Maximal obstruction.

Details in this thread:
The bad NIH director nominee, Jay Bhattacharya, will likely be voted on the week of Mar 25th. (see below)

That gives us abt 10 days to yell at Democratic Senators and tell them to bring the Senate to a halt by objecting to all future unanimous consent agreements.

This is horrible to post, but I may as well post it. We are essentially shutting down research operations in my group, which is focused on treatments for pediatric brain cancer. I’m a well funded investigator, and there’s no choice. Science can’t function without the stability of NIH

All the termination letters going out that we've seen use "inadequate performance" as the reason for termination. SAVE YOUR PERFORMANCE EVALUATIONS. Tell your friends who aren't on bluesky! Probationary employees can't be fired for "poor performance" if their performance is not poor

Yes. This is the message that every scientist should be getting out right now: “Trump/Musk are killing cancer research” — it’s a political slam dunk.

Public pushback is what can stop them now. Please help 🧪. Scientists are in all 50 states, including in red areas.
In its totality what's happening at HHS & NIH is a Musk/Trump effort to shutdown almost all cancer cure research in the US. No more new cures. Cancer's brand is really in the dumps. It polls terribly. This is a political argument that is straightforward to make. talkingpointsmemo.com/edblog/nih-a...

Some other reports say that agencies have a hard deadline of Tuesday at 8PM to fire probationary employees. Some agencies affected by the “purge” so far includes USDA, U.S. Fish and Wildlife, Department of Energy, Veterans Affairs, Department of Education, and OPM itself. (Not and exhaustive list).

On reflection, some analysis of the Trump NIH funding cuts tonight.

1. The indirect rates are unequal. But they’re not very unequal. Harvard 69%, Wayne State 55%, Texas A&M 54%, Vanderbilt 58%. Some of this variation is justified based on cost-of-living in different places.
