He remained on a partial disability pension for the resat of his life - more than 60 years. Like many of his generation he never complained, but simply pointed out that many gave far more. That generation is nearly all gone now, and we - their heirs - are so much the poorer for that. 3/3

He was showered with shrapnel, and his left arm was severely injured. A year later, after several operations he was invalided out of the army and faced civilian life in the post war with only partial use of his (dominant) left arm. 2/3
