Peter Panum was a Dane working in Germany, and the amazing brutalist building we were based in (and are now next to) is named after him.

Questionably fun fact: The study of endotoxin in modern age was kicked off by Peter Panum (studying putrid fluids). He had also done work on albumen, releasing “something” with dilute acid hydrolysis. Eichwald in 1865 did that same reaction on mucin, arguably starting the study of glycoproteins.

Pretty low-effort example of plagiarism here.

Sad, but probably inevitable news from Vodafone AU. I have been sitting on an ancient mobile phone plan for the past 25 years, with no minimum cost for infrequent usage, and they’re finally removing the plan. Are there any reputable places to port Australian mobile numbers to for e.g., VOIP?

This Lorenz Oken guy might just be on to something. The article mixes slime and mucus interchangeably, but it is a good read about the relative rarity of complex life. www.asimov.press/p/slime

Well, it turns out that you can actually make PyMOL do quite a lot of stuff. Here's the full workflow, integrating the amazing ReGlyco into PyMOL to re-glycosylate the LDLA linker. There's some serious magic needed to get it running as fast as it is within PyMOL. @elisafadda.bsky.social

I have this script I use to munge citations in word docs, that spelunks into the XML and creates Zotero/Mendeley compatible field codes. I figured it couldn’t be that hard to get it working for EndNote. It was. Even Gemini told me not to, which made me even more determined. Now it works.

The ream is defined as 20 quires of 25 sheets. And why…?

I mean, it’s one ream of paper, Fiona. What would it cost, $10?

"Your scientists were so preoccupied with whether or not they could that they didn't stop to think if they should" @elisafadda.bsky.social , you know we could make an awesome plugin.

Yet still a vast improvement over the old model!

I’m as against the AI slop it’s all too easy to make, but it’s still pretty impressive tech. I always test the latest stuff on my standard prompt - riffing on Harrison Ford in “Extraordinary Measures”.

Do we need another isoform expressed? Pretty common to have two isoforms of ST8SIA expressed in a cell. Do most of the other cells also have a dormant capacity to make PolySia (activated by having whatever this other factor is?)

Already there! You can go to the list, and click on pin, fiddle around a bit, and get your BlueSky feed to default to glyco all the time, because we all know that's the only thing worth social media-ing about!

It kind of just flops the sugars on the structure. We know α-Man doesn’t really change secondary structure on β-strands/sheets (e.g., cadherins). So I guess that’s consistent. Otherwise 🤷🏽‍♂️ ? We might be able to see this using CryoEM/whatever.

If you’re interested in putting glycoproteins into #alphafold3 but don’t know which glycans to put in, I have a tool for you. You can either search for proteins, and it will pre-populate a JSON job file for you, or you can draw biologically plausible glycans, and get the AF code for them.
