It’s that time of year: what was the piece of writing about AI that stuck with you the most this year, pop press or academic? A few of mine in the thread. ⬇️

If someone wishes you "happy holidays," it doesn't mean they hate Christmas. They're simply acknowledging that there are *many* sacred observances that take place this month, including the anniversary of Muntadhar al-Zaidi throwing a shoe at George W Bush on this date in 2008.

This is very good and contains a lot of appalling data and heart wrenching stories. I'm lucky enough to live in a country where your income doesn't determine your access to healthcare and there's nothing - nothing! - I fear more than the privatization of this particular sector.
I wrote about the coverage of the online reaction to the UnitedHealth CEO's death and how the media will always center those in power.

If you've watched a loved one suffer and die from insurance denial, it's normal to wish the people responsible would suffer the same fate.
Why "we" want insurance executives dead
No, that does not mean people should murder them. But if you've watched a loved one suffer and die from insurance denial, it's normal to wish the people responsible would suffer the same fate.

A great read.
This is genuinely great from Gessen if only because it takes something pretty basic about anti-trans politics (it's part of a broader reproductive regime akin to the eugenics of fascist cults) and explains it to an audience still convinced this has anything to do with fairness in women's sports
Opinion | The Secret Behind America’s Moral Panic
Trans rights aren’t just trans rights. They’re reproductive rights.

A year on from the IDF's assault on Gaza's largest hospital, it has yet to provide any compelling evidence to suggest facility was a Hamas HQ, as alleged by Isreal and US. Attack set the tone for a campaign that has since decimated Gaza's medical system. www.washingtonpost.com/world/2023/1...
The case of al-Shifa: Investigating the assault on Gaza’s largest hospital
The evidence presented by the Israeli government falls short of showing that Hamas had been using the hospital as a command and control center, a Post analysis shows.

This + large scale trolling, repeated misinformation, piling on and other online tactics are fundamentally different from a vis-à-vis disagreement or even heated argument! We shouldn't treat them like they are more or less the same kind of experience!
resolved: people who insist that all social media sites must be places where users are constantly encountering and arguing with people over fundamental disagreement do so because their actual, real lives are echo chambers where they do not encounter any meaningful difference from day-to-day.
