I recently learnt that crocodiles are closer to birds (i.e. they have a more recent common ancestor) that they are to lizards.

Do you have any other examples of surprising "species x is closer to species y than they are to species z"? Surely this must be hard to beat […]

A great writeup about the combined role of formalism and intuition in math:

Managed to solve #celtix today with 102 walls, which is 2 less than the maximum possible number of walls (and maximal solutions always have an even number of walls).
@OscarCunningham wonder if @OptimalCeltixBot could be modified to also show a solution with as many walls as possible?

"Reconstructing images seen by people from their fMRI brain recordings provides a non-invasive window into the human brain."

I don't know, reading the images right inside your brain seems pretty invasive to me...

(I'm kidding, of course I know what "non-invasive" means in this context. Anyway […]

David Madore always has fascinating computability theory riddles:
… instead of answering “yes” or “no”, the oracle will present to you (each time you ask a question) two Turing machines: for a “yes” answer, one of the two machines halts and the other doesn't, whereas for a “no” they either both halt or both don't. …

My mastodon feed: "<liberal politician> is gay!* Take that, conservatives!"

Reddit's front page: "Look at how gorgeous <same politician>'s wife is!"

A video of Frodo walking from the Shire to Mordor in #lotro 's map — a MMORPG which (from what I've been told) is surprisingly faithful to #tolkien 's Middle-Earth.

Anyone using #withastro willing to help a noob?

I am setting up a website with two pages A.mdx and B.mdx. I want to put a link to page B on page A. But of course I don't want to hardcode the whole site's URL, I want to put a relative link.

I tried to use Astro.url from page A, but the Astro […]

Very nice, simple and tangible musical analogy (well, it's a bit more than an analogy actually) for serial data transmission in this #computerphile video:

The recent launch of a "social" media app entirely dedicated to AI slop has sparked outraged reactions, and I agree with the sentiment, but for years there's been AI slop pictures and videos shown in museums (including very prestigious ones!) and I've never seen anyone take issue with it. And I […]

I've been thinking of getting into #embroidery. Usually when I think of a new skill to pick up, I'll get inspired by stuff some experimented person did, figure I'm super smart so I ought to be able to get at a comparable level fairly quickly, and then realize it's harder than I expected.

But […]

Having not read a whole book for way longer than I'm willing to admit, I'm proud to say I've started reading the Lord of the Rings again.

First and last time I read it was about 15 years ago; back then I only knew that it was a fantasy novel about a quest to destroy the dark lord's dangerous […]
