Wonderful to converse with Kishore Mahbubani on his recent book, his memoir.

We talked about the rise of Singapore/SE Asia, the good/bad of US foreign policy, the shifting global order -- while interweaving his compelling personal story through the convo. Do watch!

Re-upping my recent @nytimes.com piece on how Trump could re-imagine U.S. grand strategy, taking a leaf from U.S. allies/partners, who are beginning to follow the Global South and increasingly hedging.

Today’s @foreignpolicy.com Latin America Brief is about stories we're following in 2025, including strategies for responding to a heavy-handed 🇺🇸, EV rollouts and emissions plans, and 🇧🇷 taking the helm of BRICS.

My longtime collaborator @globalsarang.bsky.social has a provocative piece on how key countries in the global south like Turkey are hedging with respect to the United States, neither fully pulling away nor embracing it. Gift link. www.nytimes.com/2024/11/11/o...

Dan Ford & I find that, while the Global South is not of one voice, a large number of states well beyond the Arab world are taking Israel to courts over Palestine/Gaza. Washington, Israel's core backer, is increasingly exposed to reputational consequences.

Been curious why Global Environment Facility isn't talked about more with respect to loss and damage or the World Bank's Global Facility for Disaster Reduction and Recovery. Both seem like natural homes for that work.

My frequent collaborator puts the onus for barriers to US-China cooperation on climate on the US and its habits of primacy. I think there is likely more US domestic politics and Chinese responsibility here but clearly US offer set on adaptation finance has been weak. Provocative argument though!
As COP28 winds down, I argue in The Nation that US habits of primacy act as barriers to progress in three ways: imbalanced US-China dynamic, broadly dismissive attitude toward the Global South & a schizophrenic US grand strategy.
