My guess is AI or someone only fleetingly familiar with ST. Add in deadline pressure and you get an ill-conceived article. (Former journo here who’s dropped his share of deuces.)
I concur with Blackjack. Fanfic writers do seem more canon-aware. Especially if they’ve writing to “fix” canon.
