On our way home after a very enjoyable week at PBO. Some very nice birds and great to catch up with friends. Thanks as always to Martin and Jodie for everything.

First brood of nightjars ringed yesterday in North Notts. Our earliest by at least a week and found just in time given they were probably eight days old. Another 5 pairs on eggs. Looks like a promising season.

It’s always nice to catch something different when we are out ringing. This drake gadwall was accompanied by a drake teal, 11 jacksnipe and 12 snipe.

At least 3 willow warblers on territory at one of my sites in North Nottinghamshire. Never known them this early before.

Nice to catch a yellow browed warbler at Clumber park in Nottinghamshire this morning. My third for the year and the earliest by a week.

Great to get our first brood of two nightjar chicks ringed today. The previous two nests we were monitoring while hatching two eggs only had one chick survive to this stage. Clearly the cold night time temperatures have affected food availability.

An excellent week at PBO with some stunning birds which included bee eater, wood warbler and a dipped flyby hoopoe. Warm welcome as always from MC and JMH and good to catch up with old friends. See you in July.

It’s been a very wet start to the year here and access to our wetland site has been difficult. That said in three visits we have managed to ring 38snipe, 24 jacksnipe, a woodcock and 17 teal plus a few oddments. The star bird to-date so far this year was this green sand caught at the weekend.
