In December I purchased this Danielle Aubuchon water color of a winter plumaged Common Loon eating a shad, just like Danielle, our birding group, and I observed on a recent Table Rock birding trip. Great pick! #americanbirdingassociation #BirdoftheYear

The 2025 ABA Bird of the Year is Common Loon!

We're excited to kick off this Year of the Loon by sharing the beautiful art from our 2025 Bird of the Year artist, Minnesota artist Sam Zimmerman.

Sam's piece, Summering Loon, will be featured on the January 2025 issue of Birding magazine.

Where the prairie meets the Ozarks in southwest Missouri, I crossed paths with one of my favorite #bird species, the Prairie Falcon on Friday, 12/8/2023. #🪶

It was a beautiful day in the Ozarks for my annual Loony for Loons field trip last Saturday. 51 Common Loons were seen. 🪶

Nine years ago this Calliope Hummingbird was at my Missouri feeder! Great memories, great photos, and great people stopped by to see it! #birds
I continue to check my hummingbird feeder every day. If you don’t expect the unexpected, you won’t recognize it when it comes.
Over 100 people, birders and non-birders alike, came to see this 2nd state record Calliope Hummingbird. It arrived 9 years ago today!

13 years ago. Whooping Cranes! When I was a kid, there were fewer than 30 left in the wild. Thanks to concentrated conservation efforts and nest monitoring, there are now close to 600. Still not nearly enough to be sustainable, but much better than in the '60's. #endangeredspecies

Love it when I find a rare bird in Missouri! Black Scoter, 11/17, Table Rock Reservoir.
