I will never regret writing my MA thesis on the Pre-Raphaelites and death. Interesting essay by Slavoj Žižek.

The Case for Letting Malibu Burn - Longreads
Many of California's native ecosystems evolved to burn. Modern fire suppression creates fuels that lead to catastrophic fires. So why do people insist on rebuilding in the firebelt?

I wrote an article once called “The Disney Way of Death.” More going on than meets the eye. Students always love this when I show in the Death class.
Welcome to the public domain, THE SKELETON DANCE (1929). 🎞️ 🎶👻 Walt Disney Studios' first Silly Symphony cartoon is a wordless masterpiece of synchronized animation & music featuring dancing skeletons in a graveyard.

I was hired at Emory in 1994. With Atlanta’s Olympics coming in 1996, the chair suggested I do something that highlights religion in Atlanta. We organized a conference at the Carter Center and then I put this collection together. I was shocked when he agreed to write the foreword to the book.

Psychedelics for life, and death. What could be more religious than that?

One of the last topics we cover in death class is suicide. Students are deeply curious about it and anxious to find a different intellectual frame to explore and understand the reality. We read a bit from this excellent study that puts suicide and death in a very different light.

After a bit of a holiday break, going to start the Death class with 3 songs instead of one.

3 sessions of Death and Dying left this semester. Topics to cover: video games, near-death experiences, psychedelics, and celebrity deaths.

Suicide is the topic in today’s death and dying class. Trying to think of a song to start off the session. Quite a few to choose from.

Takeaways from the election:

1. There is no God.
2. Maga is not a cult.
3. Maga is a religious culture with deep roots.
4. Maga religious culture is powered by destructive sacred forces: chaos, hatred, demonization, sensationalism, violence
5. Money trumps morality.
