We’re excited to welcome Grant McClure, John Selkirk, Ben Polwart, and Robert Barry, who are undertaking their 5th-year Industrial Partnership Project on the OpenFlexure Microscope, an open-source, 3D-printed laboratory microscope designed to make high-quality microscopy accessible worldwide.

So touched by this gift from our summer intern Grant McClure. Naturally, we ended up discussing how the architecture isn't quite correct... People do love feedback on their gifts, don't they 😅 #lifeofsheldon

One of the MEng students in the group opened his project slides with an AI-generated image of me trying to break a CNN and honestly, it’s kind of perfect 🥹😂 So proud (and already slightly roasted).

At the Center of the Cellular Microenvironment’s impact workshop. Really enjoying the space to think together about where cell engineering and mechanobiology are headed. @theglasgowcemi.bsky.social @unistrathclyde.bsky.social

Congrats to Grant McClure on receiving an EPSRC Summer Scholarship to work on synthetic biomedical imaging using diffusion models. Grant will be developing AI-generated cancer cell datasets to support advances in oncology research. We’re glad to have you working with us in the lab this summer!

Welcome Shan Jacob to our lab! He’s the recipient of the prestigious Diamond Jubilee PhD Scholarship at Strathclyde. His research will focus on developing an AI-integrated device for real-time blood cell imaging, classifying cells, assessing RBC deformability, and providing rapid health insights.

First successful attempt at photolithography in our new departmental fabrication facility! Features range from 5 to 25 microns. The wafer is dirty, patchy, and imperfect, but it worked! I think I’ve earned the right to go home now. 😅

Out of these six images, one row consists of real microscope images, while the other row features ML-generated synthetic images. Can you guess which is which?

Midday in December, Glasgow, where the sun stays low, casting long shadows in the northern winter light.

Spent the entire day wrestling with the draft for this solo grant, feeling like a true academic, and now it's time to tackle the bibliography. Nothing says 'genius at work' like frantically formatting citations.
