That’s exactly right. And in Latin America we know that, when an authoritarian regime takes hold, business and media fall in line — and then it becomes very hard to dislodge it…
One of the sharpest bits of commentary anyone’s ever told me is that the US isn’t an unusually right wing European country, it’s an unusually wealthy Latin American one.
It's also kind of fascinating how so much US commentary fixates on European examples when the kind of phenomenon MAGA Trumpism represents looks in many ways much closer to the kinds of authoritarian populism you get in Latin America along the lines of versions of Peronism or caudillo politics.
