Into The Deep Time by Candy Claws feels like the perfect song to sum up my feelings about this election result- sonically it reminds me of collapse and ending credits, and lyrically it focuses on the emergence of new life after apocalypse (simultaneously despairing yet hopeful)!

Back in 2017, conductor Sarah Hicks and I somehow convinced our supervisors to let us produce an entire Minnesota Orchestra program of protest music - orchestral works specifically written to address a political cause. My opening speech from that show is still my favorite thing I've ever written.
How do you see in the dark? How do you find a way forward when it seems as if the world itself is constructed to hold you in place? If you decide to fight back against injustice, or inequity, or inhumanity, how do you choose your battles? What happens if you lose? What happens if you win? And what does winning even look like if, at the end of your war, there is still injustice, and inequity, and inhumanity in the world? And while we’re asking questions: what possible good can music do in the face of all the cruelty that this world can throw at a person? When the consequences to resistance are measured by the amount of violence that those with power are willing to inflict on those without, how can we justify asking each other to face down such violence with only our hearts, and our words, and our songs? The great American songwriter, Woody Guthrie, once said this about why he felt called to write music that celebrated men and women who sought change and redress for grievances. He said, “I hate a song that makes you think you are just born to lose... I am out to fight those songs to my very last breath of air and my last drop of blood. I am out to sing songs that will prove to you that this is your world... I am out to sing the songs that make you take pride in yourself and in your work.” We have nine such songs for you tonight. They celebrate hard work and the people who do it. They rail against those who would sit comfortably by while others are harmed in their presence. They wrestle some of our darkest hours out into the open, so that we might hold them up to the light. These songs are mileposts, markers in the sand to remind us of the things we have overcome, and also of where we have failed each other. Sometimes, the overcoming and the failing are two sides of the very same story. Let’s start there.
