Dunno, he might be more like Brown than we realise. Brown wasn't good in large groups for a number of reasons.
Major is by all accounts charming.

OED dive - Consice 2011 - has listings for "fay" Origin ME from OFr 'fae' faie'

Of course there's a list. They always make fascinating reading - those sorts of lists

It's unlikely to be her, but it is usual for a lot of the budget proposals to be leaked by 'someone'. That's how they gauge how the markets will react.

Your letter is good.
Her reply is not. She hasn't even bothered to address the direct issue of you having lent her your vote.

Yes, but work visas are usually only a couple of years, and they get very sticky after about 60 / 65 yo because of health insurance.
You can 'retire' if you have assets - I've friends who bought some years ago and are staying, but that's because their kids and grandkids are there.

Unlikely to be Dubai unless very wealthy. Permanent residency is hard to get unless you buy property and prices are high.
Sunnier bits of Europe, Australia / NZ if the right connections.
I'm not sure that anyone other than the tax office tracks where people go to live

That is a loooong walk. I did about 11km yesterday and had tired legs

Thanks Emma. I was devastated when the Metro closed (I was a regularly at the LaAm Film Festival for years). I would be really glad to see that space put to good use to serve the community.
Only sad I don't live there any more

I'm firmly of the opinion that these polls should be banned. They prove nothing because there isn't going to be an election tomorrow. And people regularly lie (deliberately) if asked what they feel to be intrusive questions by strangers
November 16, 2025 at 11:45 AM
This is very true, but it's what those 'in power' are likely to listen to - if they listen at all, which I doubt.

The UK is lucky indeed that your family chose to make this your home.

It's always been so. Some vested interest leaks stuff, sees what the markets do and uses that response to put pressure on the Chancellor.
The end result of all these games is what is read out on 26 November.
I've not had a job of listening to Budget speeches for a long time, but remember it well

Ah, interesting!

So 100% of any inheritance attracts tax and the recipients tax rate? or at a standard rate.

The 'all income is taxable' is already the case in some jurisdictions. In Portugal you even pay tax on lottery winnings over, I think, €50,000 - but it may be less.

Oh, I thought of the joke first, but your avatar looks young for that, so I thought best to reply straight.

Heartbreaking, absolutely heartbreaking

The technical answer is it is easier to transfer the files from Word to any pagemaking software if everyone uses Word.
If all authors used another package - say Scrivener - then the pub cos might move.
As someone who uses Word daily - I feel your pain.

Yes, I was. We had very little of the material frills of life, but buckets and buckets of love.

I just love it when Spanish (or any other Europeans really) realise I understand *something* and just Slow Down.

Doing your homework by candlelight. Not sure we had central heating until about 1975, so the fear of the kitchen boiler (coal) going out.
Big old, cold old house - but warm with people.
I think my mum's mortgage was about 4x salary, but our circs weren't the norm
