I'm sure many people have had that inner conflict and confusion that Daryl has here, and it's easy to fall into when your environment is hostile and media never shows reality.

Yup! You can even see a picture of Józef Piłsudski wearing one. It was Polish folk clothing made from Fabric and eventually became army regalia. Eventually it was abandoned as it looked too close to German garrison caps.

I like the idea that he and Daryl are, on the surface, the same sort of person: gruff, masculine, nonchalant, idiot bros, but Daryl has... *issues* and fears with not looking traditionally masculine, where Greyson will throw on eyeliner and a choker whenever he wants.
