Whatever the source, it's helpful. It's actually attributed to Mary Ann Pietzker, a Victorian poet, from her poem "Is It True? Is It Necessary? Is It Kind?" published in her collection "Miscellaneous Poems" in 1872. I've also seen it attributed to Socrates, Rumi, and Sathya Sai Baba.
