Shame is an inevitable theme to turn to when discussing the Knight of the Cart, as it (or a lack of it) forms the central thematic pillar for Maleagant and Lancelot both. Lindheim-Marx posits that KotC is a critique of extremity in regards to honour and shame, with Lancelot and Maleagant at the undesirable extremes and Gawain as an idealised moderate. I don’t disagree with this reading, but I would suggest that KotC can be read as a criticism of the idea of being particularly concerned with honour and shame in general, and it is this reading that shapes my analysis. Maleagant is ultimately undone by his inability to accept shame, and Lancelot is able to succeed because his eccentricities mean the idea of shame scarcely matters to him at all. Gawain, the ideal moderate, is functionally excluded from the story altogether, because as a noble and upstanding man he will not voluntarily do anything shameful, and thus is ultimately unequipped to rescue Guinevere. If one continues into Perceval, Chretien spends a great deal of time needling Gawain with dishonour and shame in a way that to me reads as interested in exploring that perfection finally cracking and the inadequacies of that moderation - but this post is not about Gawain.

However, Lancelot's obsession with the queen is so intense that it frequently brings him more harm than good. In the same way, Meleagant's relentless quest for renown and recognition as the best knight in the world consumes and torments him, causing him to hatch Machiavellian schemes, and ultimately precipitating his tragic demise. Both characters also have rather unbalanced relationships with gender. Lancelot gravitates towards women, spending much time in their company and forming much deeper bonds with them than he does with men, while Meleagant's entire nature is shaped by his relationship with male characters, most obviously his father and Lancelot, and he takes little notice of/interacts very little with women, including Guinevere, for whom he rather unconvincingly professes his love.

Meleagant was a tall knight, well built in body and limb, red-haired and freckled. He was so arrogant and unscrupulous that he would never forgo anything that excited him, whether good or evil; nor did he welcome being rebuked. He had turned his back on all kindness and refinement, and no one was more ruthless and cruel than he; nor could he bear seeing people enjoy themselves. On the day when Galehaut put his father Bademagu in charge of his land, Meleagant was present, eager to see Lancelot because of the wonderful things that people had said about him. That was in fact his only reason for being there, for he hated all good knights he ever heard about, feeling quite sure that no one could be better than himself.

he imprints on galahad like a duckling and is like knight me knight me knight me!! okay sick now I'm gonna go and do a Knightly Adventure [just kind of goes around taking random stuff until he gets beaten up for it] He sees a maiden weeping over a mortally wounded knight in the woods and goes "aha! I shall Rescue a Maiden! That's a Knight thing!" and she agrees to let him lead her to safety, then it turns out the wounded knight isn't quite dead and is like HOW DARE YOU KIDNAP HER and charges at him and they joust and both stab each other, and despite having the advantage maleagant is instantly knocked out cold while the dying guy has enough strength left to get up and behead the lady out of spite before collapsing and bleeding out. like two pages ago galahad waved him off to have fun on his first quest and now he comes back to this pile of bodies with mal just sort of groaning from underneath. like man I left you alone for five minutes this is the second thing he does on his epic quest. the first thing he does is see a sleeping old man with a really shiny crown in a meadow and just steals the crown and walk off with it hanging off his arm. mine now : ) I'm a knight : ) I should have shiny things : )
